Mazdaspeed Miata Crate Motor?

Do they still make these? Does anyone know how much they run these days? I'm not a mazdaspeed member, and I won't be in the near future considering my car is broken, or I'd check myself. Thanks!

Looking at options before I plunk down on another used engine.

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Just talked to the seller, I'm going VVT. Hopefully third time is a charm... I have AWESOME luck with these engines so far. :( So here's a fun picture! Pretty sure that chunk of metal is supposed to be INSIDE the engine, in the form of a rod bearing, but it decided to venture out into the world inst...

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Got a line on a VVT motor through one of the forums with good leakdown numbers and 103k on it for $750, plus he has the fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, etc to drop it into a 97. Looks like I may go that route and skip a rebuild, tear down and part out what i've got in it now. if I pop that one, ...

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Thanks for all the input. I think I've settled on picking up a used replacement to drop in so I can get the current engine on a stand and take my time. I still need to drain the oil and look for shavings before I do anything else, but I don't think I'm going to like the results. It does have pretty ...

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

I heard at one point that they quit selling those and also that they weren't the best quality?

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Well, I've done some checking around. John Brown is definitely right on target about prices, my bad on that John. You see all the armchair experts on the internet talking about $1200 "basic rebuilds"... Well, I've talked to at least 4 people so far, and the magic number always seems to be ...

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

You guys are focusing on the price. I am flexible with that. Money is not no object, but i don't mind paying for things if it's worth it. If it costs 3 instead of 2, or whatever, fine. Please stop zeroing in on a random budget I pulled out of my butt. Does anyone have a name of a good engine builder...

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Thanks? I was just asking for recommendations on names, not the 10th degree. *shrug*

One thing I definitely don't want to do is spend 2, 3, 4, or however many thousand dollars and find out the guy doing the work wasn't any good.

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Agree to disagree. I can order a built motor that would do more than I need for 4k and not even bother with the one I have. http://trackspeedengineering.com/product_info.php/cPath/49/products_id/96/osCsid/1v4m9ar17d439qivgnhccjbns5 Anyway, I wasn't asking for recommendations on budget or anything el...

Re: Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

Sorry I guess I didn't put in enough information. This is my second used engine to go out, and I'm tired of swapping engines. I'm looking for someone to give me a good, streetable, freshly-built engine with forged connecting rods but otherwise stockish. I'm looking to turbo, but only to around 220wh...

Good engine builder for a miata 4-cylinder?

My new used engine from classic investments is knocking about 8 months later. :(

Rather than drop another used one in, I'd like to try to get it competently rebuilt with forged rods this time. Does anyone know anyone who is good at this?

Re: AC / Refrigerant Question

Ted, I haven't, but I don't think that's it. The high side stays right at about 150 and doesn't go up hardly at all when I add refrigerant. If I had a leak big enough to do that, I wouldn't expect it to hold any refrigerant, and if I had a leak small enough to stop leaking at 150, I would expect the...
