The SCCA Regional club race is still on at VIR this weekend. Some friends of mine are going. I'll have a report when I hear from them.

As Steve said, the pavement strongly favors race tires, so much so that they have two pro classes, race tire and street tire. Otherwise, street tire drivers would have no chance using the standard PAX.

You choose it during registration. Some numbers may have been reserved. You can reserve a number for the season by registering for the first event of the year even if you aren't planning on attending. Just don't pay when you're registering at MSR. If you don't show, you don't owe anything.

Short term, if you run in novice class, then the car class doesn't matter as only your raw time counts. Long term, you won't ever be competitive in STU at major events.
