Event 7 sound "Hall of Shame" (advisory)

Post by MikeKelly »

Good event - Sound readings Saturday were not that noteworthy because most of the usual suspects had to be soft pedaling past the sound meter (no "good location" was available).

Sunday's readings were fairly typical - A little low for most - very few were "really singing" as they came past.

Anything over 90 is listed.

1- XP45 - Brian Robbins - 99.4 - no pelli without augers.

2- (tie) - STM53 - Gary Mitchell - 98.3 - yes, the exhaust was pointed at the meter, but "too loud for pelli".

2 (tie)- PSTU91 - Marcus Luttrell - 98.3 - Saturday 96.5, 96.9, 98.3, 97.6 - Sunday 96.3, 96.9, 97.0, 97.4, 94.7

3- PESP99/199 - JY/Mark - 97.4 - 92-93 Saturday, 94-95 Sunday, 97.4 "outlier", probably wheelspin.

4- XP1 - Clinton Woolson - 96.8 - He didn't have all his sound stuff in for "Thunder Valley".

5- STM98 - Doug Evans - 96.7 - This car was not well spun up coming past the meter either day, but has been asked to modify the exhaust before further runs at pelli.

6- (tie) XP06/106 - Jim Simmons - 95.7 - Nothing above 93 Saturday, nothing below 94 Sunday (meter location).

6- (tie) XP42/142 - Bob Ross - 95.7 -

7- (tie) FP59 - Michael Washington - 94.9 -

7- (tie) NCAMT40 - Ryan Tungett - 94.9 -

8- (tie) - PSTS96 - JB - 94.7 - No SuperTrapp for Thunder Valley.

8- (tie) - NAS35 - James Thomas - 94.7 -

9- (tie) - STM17 - Ben Bailey - 94.5 -

9- (tie) - CAMT15 - Brian LaRose - 94.5 - Couldn't catch this car spun up - sounds considerably louder than 94.5.

10- AM1 - Me - 94.2 -

11- FS23 - Stephen Vrooman - 94.0 -

12- NCAMS11/111 - Lee Daugherty - 93.2 -

13- STR37 - Tim / Bronwyn - 92.3 - heh, Bronwyn runs pretty fast when you spin a Cobra toward her...

14- AM78 - Chad Sumney - 92.2 -

15- STR34 - Patrick Whaley - 92.0 -

16- CAMC7 - DeWitt Payne - 91.9 -

17- CAMC99 - Jon Coatney - 91.7 -

18- STX11 - Carl Peters - 91.6 -19- STR31 - John Smith - 90.5 -

20- ES38 - Karl Rickert - 90.4 -

DisHonorable mention - NSTM67 - David Norris - Nothing over 90, but the exhaust was coming out the other side (away from meter), and seemed pretty loud - this was the black RX7, cut down similar to Sean's car.

That is all.

If the 97 was on my run, it was probably when the sway bar link broke. Big wheelspin right next to you when it happened.

heh - consider it making my arguments well in advance - so there's very little left to (successfully) argue about at pelli...

It shows in the notes as your 3rd run Sunday.

This is odd:

Because of this:

Results appear to be very reliable today - a few DNFs were issued. One car did not finish their runs due to being way over the limit.

1st - Corey Williams CAMT 9: 92.3, 100.8

2nd - Bradley Allen STM 75: 91.2, 98.8, 96.2, 98.0

3rd - Mike Janssen PSTX 11: 95.2, 97.2, 97.0, 96.8

Dishonorable Mention:

DeWitt Payne CAMC 7: 92.9, 93.2, 93.2, 93.9

Ariel Robbins XP 06: 88.3, 91.3, 93.8, 93.3

Mark Pilson PESP 99: 92.2, 91.4 93.7, 90.5

Clinton Woolson XP1: 93.2, 92.3, 91.5, 93.2

Marcus Luttrell PSTU 91: 91.2, 92.1, 92.5, 92.1

I know, I know. Different course, different variables, etc, etc. But doesn't Pelli usually read higher than most sites because of the "bowl" ? I'll get an auger from Coatney next time I'm Pelli to put on the car in case I no longer post 91-92s there.

On further review - I agree - Very odd.

I actually didn't hear you run since we were in the same run group, but I've got to suspect you've broken an exhaust pipe or something...

The only other time(s) I've seen those sorts of increases were from greatly improved driver performance / or tire performance / or both.

So,,, do you feel like you're doing a much better job driving the car, or do you have much grippier tires on it???

Or maybe both???

First time on the list! I guess without the tail insert and at the right rpm it just cracks 90 now. Good to know so I won't open it up any more.

After this past weekend, I'm finally doing an exhaust for the Spyder. Hopefully, I can get something that I can hear over cars, but isn't too loud on the limiter.

Speaking of that, do we have any data on how loud a car is on the limiter versus just below it?

Yep Steve, at Wilmington champ tour Ryan was on the limiter and hit 98.7 and when he was off the limiter on the next day when he went by the sound meter he was at 92.4 and he ran the GT500 in ESP trim.

My god, that was a fast course!

My car has made grip improvements vs last time at Pelli, but that event at Pelli saw my whole RPM range as well. No cracks on the exhaust, recently inspected it.

On day one he hit the limiter in 5 different places on course. Day two only one spot.

The Saturday course was one of my least favorite courses ever. There were zero elements in an ES Spyder. Sunday was fun, though I spent like 20 seconds in the limiter.

I had probably a 10 second stretch on the limiter at Blytheville Sunday, too. I'd never spent so much time on the limiter in a single element before, but it was BUSY.

Courses are fast now.

I recall being pretty satisfied with that set of results - reviewing it, looks like Mark + JY were a little low, but Jim Simmons was right where he usually runs (and IIRC, he was on the new augers for that event - he may have added an extra auger flight since then).

Mark and JY always peak (sound) during the heat of summer - so that part doesn't surprise me.

But I'm definitely surprised your numbers were as high as they were for this weekend.

And you weren't any lower Saturday - also surprising...

Was this when I was...ahem...much closer to the meter than the required 50ft? I don't think the Geo had even made the hall-of-shame for a pelli event before. I even just put a fresh (same model, less broken) muffler on the car.
