Event #8 Sound "Hall of Shame"

Post by MikeKelly »

Sunday's course did not lend itself to big sound readings. I have reviewed Eric Anderson's best run linked below and determined that we had the meter in the best possible position - just not a course where many were going to get spun up and stay hard on the throttle in second (anywhere).

Another complication was we were picking up considerable "throttle blip" from some cars at the :38 second mark in Eric's video. All the operators were advised not to use numbers from this "throttle blip" - we're supposed to be monitoring from 90 degrees (side).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jefezDL ... e=youtu.be

1- ASP13 - Richard Graves - 97.4, 94.2, 96.1, 94.4, 95.2 - This car is clearly too loud for pelli, but exhaust mods are on the way.

2- SM54 - Brook Bagwell - 96.7 - Ordinarily I would throw this out as an outlier, but I had already made a mental note that the car sounded a little loud all day - 95.7, 82.9, 89.2, 96.7, 89.9

3- FS23 - Stephen Vrooman - 95.1 - Another good candidate for being an outlier, except for being a regular "hall of shamer". 91.4, 95.1, 89.2, 90.8, 85.1

4- CAMC47 - Daniel Larson - 94.6 - 91.6, 90.7, 91.8, 94.6, 93.9

5- XP106 - Jim Simmons - 93.4 -

6- STR34 - Patrick Whaley - 93.1 - He was in the 80s until his steel wool blew out.

7- PESP99/199 - Pilson - 92.8 -

8- CAMT9 - Corey Wiiliams - 92.1 -

9- XP45 - Brian Robbins - 92.0 - 82.1, 87.5, 87.2, 92.0, 86.1 - Was this augers, a different mod, or just the course?

10- CAMC99 - Jon Coatney - 91.9 -

11- PSTS96 - JB - 91.8 -

12- STR10 - Ben Foster - 91.2 -

13- STU98 - Brian Flanagan - 90.4

14- AM1 - Me - 90.3

15- PSTR37 - Tim Ray - 90.1

For comparison, my current control group (generally about as loud as we can stand at pelli):

PESP99 - 91.7, 92.8, 90.6, 89.5
PESP199 - 89.9, 88.8, 87.3, 89.5
XP106 - spin, 92.4, 93.3, 92.8, 93.4
PSTS96 - 91.4, 91.3, 90.5, 91.8
STS96 - 84.9, 91.4, 87.1, 84.6, 84.8
AM1 - 90.3, 89.5, 88.5, 87.7, 88.9

I'm sure Paul McFall will be sorely disappointed  : 74.1, 76.6, 75.9, 78.0, 79.4

DeWitt told me they made a big deal out of sound in the driver's meeting for the CAM challenge at Peru, telling them it would be a good sound check for the nationals. Then they set up sound in a completely ineffective position and told him his 92-94db car was 80db...

But at least he recognized exactly what had happened.

Sound Nazi's six-pack award goes to STM98 Doug Evans who sounded much better with a new resonator - 88.0, 84.0, 82.1, 86.9, 84.2

That is all.

Then again - I shouldn't say much since we only got him at 82.5, 81.4, 84.1, 83.0, 85.5 Sunday.

But he also said there were much better locations available at Peru than what they ended up using...

Mike,

I'll check the data, but either I wasn't at full throttle or I wasn't close to peak revs or both. I suspect my car is a lot louder at 7,000 RPM than at 5,000 or even 6,000. The horsepower is certainly lower, 330, 392, 406 on a chassis dyno at 5,6 and 7K RPM.

I suspect you're right on all of that.

I think that was probably the run I blew my line going into the top part so I was probably closer to the sound meter than the other runs or in the gas more trying to get back on line....or combination of both.

I checked my data and I'm doing about 5300 RPM through the first slalom in the upper lot where the sound readings were taken and am at half throttle and dropping. That would explain ~80 instead of ~90dB. Given the grip level of the tires, I'm not at all sure that I could have run through that slalom at anything close to full throttle. Maybe someone with better reflexes than I could do it. Then again, maybe that's why I'm not two seconds faster and running with the Pro's.

Here's my third run: https://youtu.be/xbVCUh80fE0

It's not my fastest, by a few tenths, but the accelerometer data is better.

Edit: I just noticed that the video sync is off. The video is about 1 second behind the data.

After fixing the video timing, it's obvious that I could have used a lot more throttle going past sound, at least when my tires weren't overheated.

Mentioning your name and using your video weren't enough???

Fair is fair, heh -

I am instituting a new policy that all former allstar hall of shamers must be listed in the hall of shame. :pirate:

If the fastest car there can be sub 90.......no excuses that they all can't be.
