Event #10 Sound Hall of Shame (advisory)

Post by MikeKelly »

No results from the first run group due to ineffective meter position selected by the sound nazi (who was also busy in the first run group).

For some reason Smokies seldom produces the same sorts of high numbers that pelli produces - so bear that in mind when evaluating these results.

That said, Jim Simmons and Brian Robbins numbers seemed to turn up in about the right neighborhood, but I think it varied for some cars depending on hard they stayed in the throttle down the hill.

1- XP 45 - Brian Robbins - 97.8 - 95.8, 97.8, 96.3, 95.0

2- XP 06/106 - Jim Simmons - 97.7 - Ariel 93.1, 95.7, 97.7, 95.6 - Jim 96.2, 97.1, 97.7, , 95.0

3- NXP 20 - John Young - 95.1 - This car would easily blow 100+ with sticky tires.

4- NCAMC 1 - Devin Headrick - 94.5

5- NCAMT 6 - Ryan Tungett - 90.9 - Not sure this car will make it at pelli.

6- STM 66 - David Negrey - 90.5 - I didn't personally notice this car, but I've got my doubts based on this reading.

7 -STRP 37 / 137 - The Rays - 87.2, 88.2, 88.1, 87.7, 88.9, 87.9 - This car will probably make it most of the time.

Sound nazi 6-pack award goes to JY, whose combined numbers were - 86.7, 83.9, 83.3, 86.5, 86.3

Many thanks to JR Newman worked the meter for Stephen Vrooman and I after the event - we made multiple runs both up and down the hill to get some further data since we were in the first run group.

Stephen made four runs open (this is normally a 93-95db car at pelli) - 89.3, 89.1, 87.0, 86.3 - with homemade augers he made a run of 83.9, which is going to give him some breathing room at pelli.

I made a number of firewalled tire slipping runs both directions with the supertrapps - 86.3, 87.0, 86.4, 88.1, 87.3 86.9

That is all.

Any numbers for STM +92 ? Seems like I dropped 10-15dB with my new muffler hah! (use to read 100+ dB at Pelli)

Is there a database of all db levels? I'd like to know where my truck rated.

OK, cool! I need to have new exhaust installed, and I'll be getting a completely different configuration. That gives me a good idea what to shoot for.

Question

6- STM 66 - David Negrey - 90.5 - I didn't personally notice this car, but I've got my doubts based on this reading.

explain me your doubts, for I need to have a better understanding to fix it....

I'm going to try stuffing my turndowns with stainless steel scrubbing pads in front of the Dynatech cones, if I can come up with a better method of keeping them attached that doesn't cost much.

I didn't notice your car specifically - so I don't have any idea how well spun up you were, nor how heavy in the throttle you were at the time - we were set up between the islands going down the hill (sound).

My current thinking is that anyone who turns up over 90db anywhere, anytime, is probably in considerable danger of blowing 93db on any given run at pelli.

Maybe even - "especially on a downhill run at smokies" (over 90db)....

But all that is still a question mark (in my mind) at this point.

But all that is still a question mark (in my mind) at this point.

Further thinking on this:

I will go ahead and give notice that my new standard bearer for pelli is Jon Coatney's applause worthy exhaust system.

I have quite a lot of data on this car, including the "monster straight" we ran at event #6.

I have complete confidence that this car will not break 93db at pelli under legal satisfactory meter positioning.

I will be working out a new "control group" from the rest of the likely suspects based mainly on this car's readings - reason being - he is the only proven one who does not need to make immediate changes to run at pelli - and very reliably in the 91-92.5db range - if I get meter location "right", and given a suitable course / straightaway.

Jon, - please take this as notice that your exhaust system is officially placed on "sound nazi hold" until I gather sufficient comparative data on the rest of the hall of shamers' new exhaust system modifications.
