Event #11 Sound "Hall of Shame"

Post by MikeKelly »

Long hall of shame this event - our last best data prior to our new sound limit at Pelli.

First, apologies for the widespread sound limit confusion for Adesa - I inadvertently caused that by posting that Adesa would be “advisory” in last event’s hall of shame. Combined with a copy/paste sound policy in MSR for Adesa, it became more of a topic of conversation than it needed to be.

Next year I expect Pelli will remain at 93db, and everything else (Adesa, BMS and Smokies) will likely be the SCCA national rule (100db). Will we keep everyone advised here and MSR.

We had a pretty good location for the meter - the asphalt tended a little slick, not everyone was well spun up and fully in the throttle coming past the meter.

Here are the results, anyone over 90 better have a plan for pelli, because it’s 93.0db firm.

Readings may tend a little low - pay special attention to Jon Coatney’s readings at the bottom of the list - this car routinely runs 91-92.5 at pelli.

1- STM30 - Eric Ahlgren - 104.6, 102.6, 102.2, 102.8, 100.3 - Eric took my “advisory sound” statement seriously - my fault.

2- XP06/106 - Jim Simmons - 99.8 - no augers, many runs on this car - another committed "advisory sound" literalist...

3- SSM96 - Eric Anderson - a 99.1 outlier I could have let go, but nothing under 95.7 - Many runs on this car, mostly 96.x / 97.x / 98.x - I don’t know what to tell you other than to look for something broken - this car was mid eighties at several events this year and seemed abnormally loud to me Saturday.

4-SSM21/121 - Jake / Lee Daugherty - 97.2 - 88.0,93.4, 94.4, 96.8 / 94.9, 94.2, 89.8, 97.2, 93.9, 96.4

5- XP45 - Brian Robbins - 97.2 - 91.3, 94.2, 97.2, 93.7, 97.1

6- NCAMC1 - Devin Headrick - 96.9 - 95.6, 90.0, 92.2, 96.9, 95.2

7- FS23/123 - Stephen Vrooman - 96.8 - 84.9, 96.8, 96.1, 96.4, 95.6 / 93.1 94.5, 96.1, 94.1, 93.6

8-AM1 - Mike Kelly - 96.6 - First two runs without augers or SuperTrapps, last three runs with SuperTrapps alone - 96.6, 96.0, 90.6, 91.8, 88.8

9- KM68 - Scott Boito - 96.0 - 94.7, 93.2, 95.7, 95.9, 96.0

10- XP42 - Chris Ross - 95.3 - 91.4, 93.6, 93.7, 94.7, 95.3

11- STS96/196 - Lin Cox/ Wayne Wilson /John Brown - 93.2, 94.3, 91.7, 94.1, 94.6 / 93.4, 94.9, 92.8, 93.4, 93.5 - John Brown’s lone run in this car when not spinning the car at me  - 90.9 (fewer disks in SuperTrapp)

12- STR37 - The Rays - 92.2, 91.3, 91.7, 91.4, 93.4, 93.3, 93.4, 94.8

13- GS35 - Wendy Kirchhofer - 94.8 - 85.3, 90.0, 94.8, 89.5

14- CAMT47 - Daniel Larson - 94.6 - 92.7, 93.3, 94.6, 92.5, 93.1, 92.3

15- XP58 - Tim Cole - 94.6 - 85.3, 90.0, 94.8, 89.5

16- NAS35 - James Thomas - 93.2 - 90.5, 89.9, 93.2, 93.1, 92.3

17- NGS25 - Khayman Buff - 92.6 - 88.4, 89.6, 87.4, 92.6, 92.5

18- NCAMC44 - Taylor Repko - 91.8 - 90.3, 89.1, 90.1, 90.5, 91.8

19- AM3 - Sean McDonald - 91.8 - Many, many runs on this car and that one was clearly an outlier - typically mid eighties.

20- NSTP9 - Patrick Jadwin - 90.8 - 89.1, 82.9, 90.8, 89.8, 84.7 - I noticed this car is loud, never caught him spun up + in the throttle.

21- STR94 - Patrick Whaley - 90.6 - 90.0, 90.5, 90.3, 90.6, 90.5

22- AS151 - Charlie Ford - 90.3 - 87.6, 89.6, 90.3, 88.3, 88.9

23- NBS16 - Max Heres - 90.1 - 90.1, 84.6, 88.0, 82.7, 84.0 - an outlier.

24- STM72 - Lucas Coleman - 89.4 - 88.3, 89.2, 89.1, 89.4, 89.4

25- STM87 - Chris Peters - 89.3 - 87.9, x, 89.3, 88.7, 88.2

26- XP66 - David Morrison - 89.2 - 88.7, 89.1, 89.2, 88.8, 88.2

27- CAMC99 - Jon Coatney - 89.0 - 88.8, 88.3, 88.6, 89.0, 88.1 - this car is the prime example of “about as loud as we can tolerate at Pellissippi”. And it will generally run 91-92,5 if the straight and meter location are “right”. He was probably a little low Saturday due to track conditions -

Take Heed, have a plan, and good luck.

That is all.

Can you tell me what my car was hitting. I may be making a change to the rear of the car and might have to change the muffler next year.

Nothing broken and I was running both large mufflers(i.e "whisper mode" )AND aditionally I was using the Supertrap......this setup is significantly quieter than the last setup I ran at pelli but kills power (I used it to kill power because the site is slicker than owl snot)

I can tell you.....where the meter was sitting I was going close to 70mph, the car was turing right at 8,600 rpm under full load AND the back tires were spinning enough for the traction control to be pulling 22% of the engines total output.

Nothing else can be done to make the car any more quiet.

No worries. I'll just skip the Pelli events.

FYI....same set up at Huntsville in similar revband/traction setup.....was blowing 89 - 93 db about 3 weeks ago (that site is typically louder due to echoes off the football stadium) and ha never blown over 90 nationally.

Great example of how impossible it is to operate under the existing SCCA soud methodology.

My issue isnt with ETRSCCA is it with the methodology we use to enforce sound globally within in the scca.

To the conversion we had at the Solo Committee meeting last night......I really think we are underestimating the impact the new sound rules will have on attendance at Pelli.

Eric,

With the (applause worthy) effort you have put into quietening that car - I am completely willing to throw Saturday's results (on you) out as an outlier / strange venue / unknown sound anomaly.

I am fully aware that you were well spun up and heavy in the throttle coming past sound (and automotive ftd for the event).

I am somewhat confident that I have etr's sound program down to as close as possible to a science (among amateur volunteers), given the existing rules, and existing (affordable) technology.

I personally invite you to the final pelli event, and we'll see how it goes - if we can't let your car complete your runs (it's 93.0db limit firm) - you are also personally invited to take the rest of your runs in my car if you like (- bear in mind, no traction control, no ABS - I am certain you are fully capable of keeping it "gathered in").

I strive to make it all as fair + honest as I know how to make it...

P.S. - maybe we ought to additionally try that car without the SuperTrapp, if that's the only thing that changed - perhaps it sets up some sort of unhelpful resonance.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The arrangement on that particular Supertrapp is different from what I have seen on almost anything else.

I figured I would have had my regular readings. I was in the throttle pretty hard and drifting from that turn all the way down the back straight.

I would like to know what I got Walter's car down to. STM 55. Like I said at the event, it was louder than hell when I got it and I think I've made it about as quiet as I can while retaining any kind of free flowing exhaust. BTW, this is with 2 glasspacks of varying lengths and a round Dynomax (glorified glasspack). No cat. Everything is straight thru so I don't think it really flows any worse than it did when it had a cat.

Thanks for the check, but I run lots of national events and have never blown over a 94 and for the last few years have been in the 89-92 range, regardless of conditions. My silencer likely needs repacked, but I don't believe I'm anywhere close to 96. But I also don't run at Pelly, so it's no biggie.

STM55 - 80.9, 82.2, 81.4, 83.6, 82.2 - I didn't hear the car Saturday but Walter tended toward the upper 80s / very low 90s.
