STM tire rule.

Post by thewelder »

I thought I heard that STM was changing to a 200tw tire this year. Is it? I am trying to figure out what I will run next year.

Honestly I don't think there is a 140tw tire faster than the 200tw tires. We wanted to keep the rule so us STM guys could but cheap 140tw tires which didn't really happen. I think all the regulars are in 200tw at this point. With that said I don't know if someone is going to change the rule. I think we should keep it 140tw to give more options if one wanted to run other tires.

What if we said something like, 200+ TW or 140+ TW tires that were designed prior to 2016? The current crop of 140's are slower than the 200's and I think we just don't want some new ringer sub 200 TW tires being used. We could even specify which 140 TW tires are legal for STM, as there aren't that many.

Bridgestone makes several 140 TW tires still today and they may or may not be better than the 200 TW auto cross tires out there at present, but if we are not going to say tires must be this TW rating or that, then let STM run what ever tire they want up to and including hoosiers. It is a run what you brung but we did agree 2 years ago to phase out the 140 and be in 200 TW in 2016 and we went ahead and let STM run the 140 in 2016. I think it is time to either just not worry about what tires they use or make it 200 TW tires one or the other.

Hoosiers would kill the concept. I think 200TW makes a lot of sense at this point.

...and nobody is going to care if someone has 3 year old 140TW R1R's at this point.

Yeah, just make it 200. Anyone that is going to come out on 140s has probably run with us before and thus no one is really going to care.

I don't think Hoosiers would really keep the spirit of the class.

Agree with the others, it doesn't really matter. Even at 140+ the fast people will be on 200tw anyway.

Sounds good to me. If I were running STM I wouldn't complain if someone beat me running some years old Toyos anyway.

I don't have time to go back though the history but I thought there was a huge outcry from the STM people about the possible move to 200 so it stayed 140.

No one makes a 200tw tire wider than 205 it a 15. I have seen some 245 x15 in a 140tw. I still don't know what I will do next year just thinking.

There was at the time. But I think that revolved around a couple of cheap tires coming to market, and the fact that used 140's were still available. I think it's been decided that those cheap 140's were kind of crappy? Maybe?
