As devil's advocate, I can see the reason for the differences in prep within classes in the same category. The turbo/AWD crowd has certain common modifications, so does the Mustang crowd, so does the civic crowd. I think those differences are about attracting new participants to the class more than anything else.

In the current STS for example, a blanket LSD rule doesn't really make sense. The cars don't make enough poop to really need it, but if you allowed it, it would be a perceived "must have".

With the current STS, you cant use a 1.8 Miata because you can't put the power down. If you use a 1.6, you need an unobtanium viscous LSD.

My STS car has a wonderful VLSD.. I have ran it with out a good one.. and it sucked.. not from a dig, but high speed sweepers and saloms. So, they do make enuff popwer to need a Diff... just not out of a slow corner
