Softening tires
Softening tires
Is there a good way to soften older race tires. I was given a set of drag tires to run on my car. Won't be used for autocross just a few drag runs.

Re: Softening tires
There's some crap you can put on and then wrap in cellophane for a day or two. It gets mixed reviews as best i can tell.
i think a few good burnouts in the water box would probably get about the same result

Re: Softening tires
I have heard some people use vasoline and bag them for a few days. Wondering if anyone had done that.

Re: Softening tires
I've heard WD40 as well, from an old school drag racer. I don't think I'd try it, or any kind of tire treatment, or driving hard on old tires, though.

I have some Formula V you can try. In my experience, softening old tires doesn't work well. If you treat them from new, it helps some.

Re: Softening tires
Thanks everyone. A friend of mine just did the wd40 thing. He is running it tomorrow at Bristol. I will see how it does. I am waiting on parts so I won't be running this weekend. I hate to miss the autocross. I need the seat time.
