Miata wheel bearings

Post by thewelder »

My locost uses Miata spindles. I noticed before my first race that 3 of them was loose. I tightened them like I always have and raced that weekend. Then I noticed that one was loose again.
Does anyone know the factory way the right the wheel bearings. I thought I might be missing something. Thanks.

So the spindle nut was loose or there's some play in the bearing?

Spindle nut torque is: 123 - 159 lb-ft. Once torqued you'll tap an indention into the slot on the spindle.

Here's some long threads over miata bearings/hubs:

It was just the nut loose. I will tighten to factory spec and see if that helps.

Chad,
After repacking or replacing front hubs, many Spec Miata road racers torque the spindle nut to 150 ft. lb. or higher but do not stake the spindle nut, then run one short track session to 'seat' the hub bearing, retorque to 155 ft. lb. and stake the nut. I've been doing it that way for years and never had a bearing loosen up - but I tried to save some time at beginning of this season by torqueing & staking the nut in the garage without the run-in session. Ran Sat races @ Kershaw including 90 minute Enduro, & found that both front hubs were loose. Will not be doing the shortcut any more!
