Clutch recommendation

Post by jcoatney »

I'm looking for a clutch kit to put in the RX-8 for street class. The OEM is an Exedy but costs $430. There are off brands out there starting at $75. Has anyone used another brand they would recommend? Are the cheap ones just as good?

I'd stick with the Exedy, but only based on what I've read. No personal experience.

WOW. why so expensive? I think a stock clutch for my STi costs that much.

Jon,

You should sticker the car up and apply for a Mazda Motorsports login. I'm not sure what the kit you are looking at includes, but it looks like the clutch disc and pressure plate are about $329 plus shipping from mazda motorsports. So, your pricing isn't far off, especially if it contains additional hardware.

Are you changing cars/classes and leaving CAM?

Maybe. I'll have to see if 400 less horsepower can still be exciting to me.

I had the same concern coming from the WRX, but the RX8 is a really great car. I kind of miss it actually. It's very forgiving and fun to sling around. It won't be much fun digging out of pinches at smokies, but I don't reckon anything would be really.

I need to know what you suggest for a sway bar and shocks and alignment specs.

I used the Progress MX-5 Bar that was for the Miata
I had degassed Koni doubles that I bought used. You'd be fine on OTS Koni's. You'll want to change the bumpstops to something a little harder. I'll have to look up what I bought in that regard.
Alignment - max negative in front (hopefully around -2) and about -1.7 in the rear. I did 0 toe with maybe just a smidge out in front if you like that.
