Spec tire for ssc

Post by jcox07 »

The falken tire has been chosen for the ssc class as it's spec tire for that class, that might just cause some not to go to the class.

Bleh, why would they do that? Is it super cheap or something?

TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 18, 2017) -- The SCCA announced today that the Falken Azenis RT615K+ is the spec tire for the new Solo Spec Coupe (SSC) class. In the required 225/45-17 size, the tires are currently available for $114.63 per, through Tire Rack.

New compound is the difference between 615K and 615K+ are they as fast as the RE71R NO. If you read and watch the videos on it the reviews are not bad for this 615K+ tire. The bigger sizes 315 and 295 are quit expensive same as top 3 tires. Smaller tire size are more then the spec 225 tire go figure. At $114 per tire a good DD/AutoX tire for my needs at this price I just bought 4 of them arriving Monday.

The biggest size they make is 315/30/18. The Falken in that size costs more than the BFG Rival S and more than the bigger 335/30/18 Rival S. The relatively few reviews aren't promising. They are a lot less expensive than the BFG Rival S 1.5 @ $169/tire and the Bridgestone RE-71R @ $160/tire in the 225/45/17 size though. That's pretty good for a spec tire.

I think these are excellent for road racing (LeMons, etc) so I'd be surprised if they're excellent for autox. They should be excellent for longevity at least. But as long as everyone in the class is on the same tire, what difference does it make? It's a spec class.

fun??

I dont think anyone will attest that tires are the number 1 determining factor on Fun vs NOT FUN.....

Agreed. I ran the old 615k that all the pro touring guys rave about and they were the worst tires I've ever driven on. This would keep me from running in that class. Bad move on their part.

Yeah....FUN for $114 I'm already having FUN. Money vs performance it's going to be a good tire. If you are running the National circuit and looking for that few 10's of a second then stay with the proven tires for AutoX. The tire for spec cars will be a good choice. People that just run the local points events like myself but also enjoy the Sunday ride in the mountains want to have a good all around tire for the Dragon or Skyway in dry also pretty good wet traction with low noise and good tread longevity. The FRS/BRZ forum started posting on the tire and early posts think the Falken 615K+ are a good choice. We'll see soon enough.

I think folks underestimate the fun characteristics of the twins already. Mine is fun with the all-season Prius tires on it or the RE-71R or Hankook RS-4 or Rival S. If you're a math racer, I guess PAX could be a concern, but it's a spec class so everyone will be on the same stuff. Some will like the way that tire deflects or grips or breaks traction more than other tires and some will not. But it was always going to be that way. No tire fits all.

Fun to me is not committing about 12 hours to get stomped locally on PAX.

If using the "but, every ones on the same tire" concept....... why not use the ACHILLES 2233 ??

400 tread wear @ $46.00 each..

Unless the tires are truly awful compared to Bridgestones, I'm not sure that will happen. A fully prepped SSC car looks to have a much improved suspension, lowered, stiffer springs, adjustable bars front and rear and adjustable camber, i.e. more negative, front and rear plus wheels and tires. All that will cost you north of $2K, but it should make the car have more grip and handle better than one in street trim. The PAX for SSC is only a bit higher than for DS, 0.806 vs 0.794. That's only 0.7 seconds PAX time on a 60 second course.

Here's how I look at it. PAX is far from perfect anyway. And Cathers is running the fastest car in street category. We'll all be playing for second I think.

I think the Falken will be fine. The Twins are fun even on all seasons.
