What car advice thread.

Post by nicksta43 »

So I've decided that the E21 is not going to be autocrossed any more. Too much work to get it back to stock and I don't have pockets deep enough to get it halfway competitive in any of the more advanced classes. I used to be satisfied just to show up and hang out with all the cool kids, have a good time and head home with my new sunburn but now I have an itch to be a little more competitive. So the E21 will become my rallycross car and the search is on for an autocross replacement.

Looking to stay in one of the stock classes.

Preferably RWD but not a necessity.

No Hondas.

Around 2K purchase price.

And Go... :fight:

Nailed it on the first reply, especially given your budget.

You will have a very hard time being stock class competitive in a $2000 car. For RWD, the only cheap options that come to mind are a Miata R or a 2nd gen MR2. Neither of those options will be easy to find in that price range.

I'm not saying I expect to go out and get a ringer or dominant car for two grand but I'll surely be able to get a little closer than 10s off the pace in HS. What about;

Protege?

Saturn?

1st gen MR2?

I'm keeping my eye out for a Miata however at this price range they all seem to be very poorly modified. I don't mind a rat but I don't want to put a bunch of money in it just to get it back to stock.

Went and sat in a bunch of different Miata's the other day and they are out. No spark at all. I've got to at least like the car a little bit. With the possibility of new rules coming I wonder what will happen to the older cars.

I'm still thinking along the lines of ZX2, Protege, Escort GT or ???
