SWVRSCCA Solo Belle, WV

Post by dewittpayne »

That's Southern West Virginia Region. It's about the same distance for me as Chattanooga. The scenic route through Pikeville, KY is about a half hour longer but saves $6 in tolls on the WV Turnpike. There were 5 other FS cars entered, but somehow I managed to win the class by a few tenths.

My raw time was 52.373. Second place was a BMW M3 at 52.777. Fastest car was an ASP Corvette at 48.321. Fastest Kart was 40.168.

The box was very tight for cars but the carts could go through almost flat.

ok.. I now watched the vid....

did you ask for critique?? lol
I only got one thing to say. Did anyone ever tell you that smooth is fast??

that is only true in road racing.. autocross is a flurry of harsh moves and rash decisions.. you have the "LIN SYNDROME"...

your moving in half speed.. yank that wheel.. mash that brake and stab the throttle.! smooth in autocross is S L O W ...

Thanks,

It didn't feel all that smooth when I was driving it. I was on the ABS braking for the box, for example. Stabbing the throttle with over 300 ft/lbs of torque on relatively skinny street tires often results in lots of smoke and rotation where you don't want to be rotating, when it doesn't result in terminal understeer.

But I take your point and I'm working on it.

Glad you had fun. I know the course was pretty straight forward, but did you do anything differently with course walks?

I walked it about three or four times, but it was intuitive. There were flour outlines, pointer cones and directionals (three laid down cones in a row) that made it pretty obvious where to go and even where to look next. I was able to walk the course the first time with no map and no need to ask questions. That meant that when I got in the car it was a lot easier to concentrate on driving a line rather than wondering where to look next. I actually walked it the first time with a video camera at about my eye level in the car. I was going to play that at fast forward, but after the walk I didn't think I needed it.

For a more complex course, I need to concentrate on identifying where I'm likely to get confused and then finding and memorizing specific visual cues to identify those spots so I know where to go next.
