STM to 200tw?

Post by MARKP »

I thought I would ask this question now, in light of the tire changes that appear to be coming for all the other street tire classes. Would anyone that runs STM have a problem if we changed the treadwear rule to 200 instead of 140? The new "street" class will be on 200tw next year (they wanted it this year but the logistics of getting the rule changed didn't allow it), and I am hearing a lot of grumbling about changing the rule in ST. It also seems to be in line with what many of the other regions are doing with similar classes.

Thoughts?

I'd vote to do it along with the other ST classes in 2015. I'd hate to see some guys already have tires for 2014 and them be under 200 TW :-\

I'm undecided, but I was considering STM for this year. Can't do it at 200TW.

That's why I'm asking the question now. If anyone is currently running an under 200tw tire, it would make a difference. If nobody is, then we might as well go ahead and make the change, IMO.

Steve, since your car is for sale, would you be running something different in STM? The new CAM class is also a 200tw class.

+1, 200TW in 2015. Gives folks time to burn off what they have and save money to buy new tarz in 2015

I doubt my car will sale, so any plans right now are based around running it.

I don't know their plans going forward, but the Ross's were on R1R's last year.

Both Street and Street Touring are on 140TW for 2014, right? I don't see any reason why STM shouldn't mirror that.

B Ross is going to a smaller tire size this year 195. not 225. I'm currently working on a 65 Mustang with tubes and a Skyline power plant with a auto trans.

I was looking at STM as the only place to run a fun street tire after 2014.

That's just not gonna be the case I don't think. I would be surprised if you don't see an equally fast Toyo in 200 TW. Hankook kept the same tire (good tires, btw) and just stamped 200 on the side. I suppose they thought that 140 on the sidewall would help sell them.

I agree that if it is to be changed, announce now that it will change in 2015... not 2014, as people have already made plans, bought tires, etc for 2014. Also, since this is a made up class for us locally I'm not sure why it needs to follow some rules of other classes...

Well we nased the 140 requirement on national rules. That's how scca national rules define a "street" tire so we need to mimic that as much as possible.

Let's say there is 1 tire in 2015 that remains 140, but 4 other brands at 200. Since STM is wide open otherwise, and also a class where a lot of beginners get their start, it would not be logical to allow that one 140 tire in the class.

Now, whether that 140 tire is really faster is a different discussion, but I personally think it's a bad idea for the potential to exist that there is a perceived "hot tire" for STM because it may be available in limited sizes

So is Street Touring officially going to 200TW in 2015? I don't keep up with this stuff any more.

If so, that sucks. I don't even care about the front of the car, but the Toyo is so good on the rear of the car. It really makes it fun to drive.

I am OK with the 200 tread change. My Star specs are still legal at that point.

SCCA rules creep into STM? The whole point of STM was to be a catch all - run what ya brung class. Are we really going to tell some new person with horrible Pirelli's that they can't run in a catch-all class? Are we really worried about people running a 1% faster tire in a class that is so unregulated that you can run a v6 Metro?

I'm already on 200tw tires, so this doesn't effect me, but it does rule out common "performance" tires that someone new might have. Imho, it also goes against the spirit of the class.
