Missed you Walter Jones!

Post by John Brown »

I have to believe that I speak for the entire club here... but I definitely felt the absence of Walter being there Sunday.. :(
That being said, for all that didn't show in fear of the rain... it turned out marvelous!! And even tho I set up the course in pouring rain,it was a hack job that "I" felt like drove much faster than it walked when it dried out.. I don't think a more "fair and balanced course" could have been achieved on any given day.
That was the first Season Opener I have won in many years I believe. I didn't think it could happen after Pilsons opening run... lol

GREAT JOB ETR !!

Definitely missed having a chat with Walter.

Anyway, it was good getting out and seeing everyone. Pro was crazy. McCrary had the lead going into last runs, dropped 1.7 seconds, and fell to 4th. I haven't won an event yet, but I feel like anybody can win any given day. I really cherish being able to get that feeling of competition at a local.

Too bad I apparently chose the wrong car for yesterday. Lol. I think if it had stayed wet, I would have whooped up on you guys.

How much do we have to pay for that 5-run option? [emoji38]

well... depending on the Starter on duty. but, next time... right before its my time to start,Im gonna tell the starter that that first cone was nudged..and looks out of place.. hoping he will run thru the lights and trip them,then..sit there for a few seconds to make the time look "fishy"

untried... but proven to work!

I thought I saw Walter out walking the course. logic said that wasn't possible so I put it down to the allergy meds I'm on.

I really enjoyed the course! Great variety. Perhaps running in the 2nd (dry) group helped :)

In my defense, the cone had been moved. But yes, no excuse for tripping the lights.

I wouldn't call what i did 'running'. It was faster than walking, but not by much.

I tried yelling at the corner station to get them to fix it, completely forgetting the radio in my hand.

Speaking of radios: You have to push the button and wait a couple of seconds before talking if you want anyone to actually hear you.

Im not sure what we can do in order to get better station workers. In addition to the cone that Dewitt is talking about (that nobody saw) We had a cone knocked out of position after the monsoon..and almost never found the grease markings, so, I took the liberty to go all the way around the course remarking the key cones..apex,salom,etc ..
runs were going the whole time.. and as I checked these cones... I found 4 completely out of the boxes and 2 half out. I explained to the worker of the bottom salom to watch the rear of the car,and the cone... not the car. One cone got hit twenty-thirty feet from 3 workers... and nobody saw it. I had to place the cone back. I am glad J Ford was at the station to throw the RED flag to the FRS/BRZ at the bottom of the hill.

As I remember, we didn't talk about cones at all during the driver's meeting, not that I remember all that well any more. Station captains need to spread their people out and assign specific areas of responsibility. If everybody is standing around together, they're going to talk and not concentrate on the cones as much.

As an example of spreading out, there should have been a person on the island just past start to take care of those slalom cones and the same for the finish slalom. You don't have to run as far and have fewer distractions. In general, if you have to run a long way to replace a cone, you might want to look for a safe place to stand near that cone rather than going back to the station, providing you have enough workers to do that. With only two run groups, we had plenty of course workers.

What about Station Chiefs with radio...responsibilities to oversee all the worker stations ...walk around and observe different stations from a distance (unseen) make sure each station is performing their responsibilities also can rotate between stations for additional hands on training.
