Air cooled engine vs water cooled given a big freeze (Beer

Post by Les »

Just for you guys and gals here.
In around 1983, Knoxville went in a deep freeze. The temps went down and even with anti-freeze, water cooled engines froze given about minus 23. The CRX doors were frozen shut. It was not going anywhere until it thawed out.
Back-up Car for a beer run?
The side oil cooler installed and being warmed...the carb wrapped in heavy duty aluminum foil and warming...key in the ignition...and no turn...back on the gas pedal.
Header muffler?
Startup again.
A 1975 VW Thing engine fired and went for a beer run.

Rocket 71....thank you for your comment. The 'story' is true. The Tennessee Valley is really weird about weather. Anti-freeze is dumped into a radiator given regular weather.

Oh...message to MarkP.
David Beaman rebuilt the engine of The Thing when he had his shop over on Fox Rd. The engine went from 1600 to a little over. The oil cooler was installed.
I had the frame for the soft top sandblasted and repainted. I ordered a new soft top. I had Lonnies over on Central make new windows given a template and a great job done.
A summer car is fine but winter comes...well...wonder of wonders...the factory hard top installed over the factory roll cage and snow tires put on.

Sounds like lots of good people were involved in that build.

Why do I have a feeling a Scirocco got dragged out of the weeds and trees across the yard from the Thing? There might be more than one Thing with a cage around Knoxville though.

Answer: I believe that the Scirocco was possibly a 1978 and white. The original owner was one Eric Strelnieks. He sold the car to Gary Sawyer and Gary sold it to you.

Yup, 16 valves of furry did some more time autocrossing before I pulled it out for a turbo 16V. Eric Pugh had it before Strelneiks. Would you believe it hasn't rusted completely away?

this furry was all the moss and lichen growing on it.

In the summer the inside of it looks like a terrarium.

Well, TED V...you left many handwritten messages asking to buy The Thing. I would find a note stuck on my front door from time to time We struck a deal. You paid exactly what I had paid. In the transaction....I stated one requirement and that the car would not be parted out...that it would be restored.

Wasn't me on the Thing. Had some folks I know who were interested, but I don't know anyone who got it.
