True Trac diff

Post by jcox07 »

Anyone have or have in the past used or are using one of these true trac diffs in their car? Looking at one if my T-2R is bad. Thanks JY

From what I googled I think those are for drag race applications. "Detroit Locker". So if you're going drifting, that's probably the one you'd want.

Not the Detroit locker, just a true trac.

That's a helical, which is basically like a Torsen. +1 for going clutch-type. OSGiken, Kaaz, etc.

Clutch type will not last nearly as long in my car as I have went thru 2 clutch type diffs and this is the third T-2R that has been in the car. Clutch type didn't last a full season. Looking at a wavetrac, but can not find anyone that has run one or knows anything about them other than what is on the interwebs

I'd call Giken and talk to them about your application and discuss longevity of the diff. They run them in cars making a lot more juice that you got.

I think if you spec'd a Giken or equivalent out with the proper friction material and a metric Sh!t-ton of clutches it would hold up fine. Be prepared for sticker shock on the price of their fluid, though.

Best as I recall the torque differential of the True Trac is higher than the T2 but lower than the T2R, but the True Trac doesn't use clutches to get there like the T2R - simply different angles on the helical gears.

Seems like Auburn gear also made one that looked promising (could not find it in a quick search today).

It was pretty simple for me - at the time I put mine together the only helical unit I could get for 8.8 with 28 spline axles was the True Trac.

No problems with mine - but JY is carrying a lot more weight than me, and stickier tires, and runs 31 spline axles last I heard...

P.S.

I have also heard of issues related to IRS vs solid axle.

IRS axles lock in differently - if the unit wasn't machined for that application it won't work - the axles won't lock in the carrier.

No problems with my 8.8 IRS True Trac.

Couldn't remember if JY was IRS or not.
