Sound Reg #3 5/22/11

Post by TedV »

Group 1:
AM 78… 94.0/99.6 first run, changed supertrap baffles and remaining runs 84.8 – 90.9
EM 183… 88.9 – 94.1
SM 12… 83.9 – 88.3 with one 94.6. Not sure if any extenuating circumstances on that run. It could have been some tire squeal. Car was respectfully quiet yet apparently still able to roast tires at will. Thank you.
SSM 32 … 104.3 and 101.2 with no further runs after.

Group 2:
STM 85 … 87.1 -100.7 Sorry I didn’t have a chance to talk more with you on Sunday.

Overall a fairly quiet Sunday for a drive.
Ted V.

I'm surprised my street tire squeal wasn't over the limit... felt like my ears were going to start bleeding.

On this note, and thread.. I want to express how hard it was to turn not one..but two competitors away due to sound..

But it also shows that we are very committed to keeping our lots problem free.. Im not sure what happened with that car last year, but yesterday..it was L O U D .

Drivers.. be aware of your car and if you make an exhaust change.. you need to be prepared to be able to possibly change it back in short order.. FYI.

^ STM 85 was the GTR... It was posted in another thread that it has a tune and some exhaust mods. I'm curious if that includes remove the cats, as that could be part of the problem besides the muffler(s) itself.

Glad to see JY (SM 12) was under the limit! :D

STM 85 - GTR

Thanks Ted for the info. I actually just put an extra resonator in the midpipe last week. Looks like I was just over or just under every run but one. I was hoping it was my tires due to being the stock runflats that were giving me the high DB's. I will have to see if I can add anything else to help.

I am still trying to under stand how my car went from 95 db last yr to 104 this year with no mechanical changes. If I may think out loud, with no disrespect to anyone and I applaud you guys for sticking to your guns. My exhaust exits toward the passenger side of the car parallel to the ground, so it was pointing directly toward Teddy and his sound equipment. Does anyone recall if the sound equipment was situated differently last year. Last year when Mark M. drove my car he was no the throttle quite a bit and no problem with sound. If I recall correctly that course was fairly fast up the hill but did not have as long of a full throttle section as the last event. If any of you guys can help me understand what happened, and a possible fix it would be greatly appreciated. I honestly believe the course and the location of the sound equipment (right vs left side) may have been a factor.

In respect to your Lotus James.... reguardless of what the meter said.. in reality,we didnt need a meter to distinquish that the car was loud. It was ear piercing at times.

I cant tell you what the difference is,or was. Maybe we didnt do sound at that event last year..I dont remember. Ted? I wish I had a good answer for ya.

the event was 10/10/10 do we have sound for that event on record?

There was a thread, but SSM#32 wasn't mentioned:

That is pretty odd considering Bradley's car at least got an honorable mention at the same event.

Car been modified since then?

I thought I heard someone say the car has been tuned since last year. No idea if it has been or if that would be the reason. :?:

The is engine and exhaust have not been modified. Only new brakes. I have not noticed any sound change while driving it from last yr. My prior exhaust was even louder when running at BMS.

That happened to me last year. First event of the year I picked up a bunch of warnings, then nothing the rest of the year. Never got a single warning in '09, and no changes to the motor or exhaust in the interim.

However, yours did sound (by my very subjective hearing) pretty loud.

That's happened to several people. The Lotus was a lot louder than I remember. It is probably the loudest car that I've heard at an autocross this year. There seemed to be some kind of spark cut rev limiter (or traction control?) or something that was making the car really loud.
