2013 hot ST tires!

Post by flier129 »

I love and hate this time of year when tires start popping up. Which tire do I choose? Should I stick with what I've tested? I wonder if "x" tire will be faster on my car like that one car the random magazine tested in "x" settings? How much will they cost? Will they need to be shaved? Will they work well in the wet or/and cold?

Seems as though some people are testing the BFGoodirch Rival at NOLA this week. They've got the Dunlop Z2s, Hankook RS3s, and the RT-615ks, that's all I've heard of so far. There's even rumors that Michelin might have an auto-x tire(something said at National banquet)

I've got some life left in my RS3s, so I'll probably let everyone else with more money to test out these tires and I'll make my decision from there.

I've been spoiled. I tried different tires on the Mazda, but I knew that no option was terrible. The Toyos have been a no brainer since I've had the CRX. However, several years back, when people were transitioning from the Fallkens to the Bridgestones, you might as well not show up unless you had the right tire. I don't want to spend five or six or seven hundred bucks to be in that position.

Seven hundred for four tires, I wish. That only gets me two for anything fast.

I wouldn't be doing this at $700 for tires, lol. $450 and I'm good

well, since I had to buy new tires last Sept ( R1R's) I pretty much "stuck" with them 'til they wear out ... so unless I use them at TT's they should last the entire season ...

when the Toyo's came out it was pretty much 2 yrs 'til they became "the" tire in STS/C ... maybe it'll take most of this yr to get the new tires straightened out ... well I can hope can't I ?

Just run the toyo's, who will sit in a tree and record what tire you have at local event. Unless it is the secret spy that does not run a full season and only comes out to bitch about what othere people are doing. Pixy grip or none. Shave the sides and buy a burner and give them a new name, chung chow or chewy grip 195.

My laps in the MX 5 were done yesterday as 1-off back to back comparison in the same car/ same driver on NOLA's full course- lap time around 2:08"

according to my informant.. (who is there testing) these are not being compared to the 195 Toyo on light cars. Its more STX style cars.. heavy.
Ill know more today. Just like the 195 being golden on an STS car.. they suck on a M-8 or Subie..

thanks JB ... it would be nice to hear the results from a lightweight STS/C type car .. + it would be nice to hear about their wet performance ( I'm especially looking for a set of "wet" for my TT sessions ... and would prefer NOT to have to pay the purple crack price for tires that I can't use anywhere else .... the ZII's or the BFG's ... or whomevers turns out to be the best can always double as regular a-x tires

I look forward to hearing what they say. I likely will be on last year's dunlops till the smoke clears.

I chased the right tire last year and wasted alot of time. Everyone liked the kooks better for the heat so I went that way. I went back to Dunlop because they fit my diving style much better.

In 205/50, the Rival is listed on TR @ $127 and the ZII is listed @ $114.

Looking at the tread pattern, the Rival is probably fine for an intermediate wet, but there isn't much void area. I can't see it being very good for standing water.

I had intended on using the ones that are mounted for Dixie, until I found out about the schedule conflict. There's still a lot of meat on them.

For the STS/C cars it's hard for me to imagine anything being significantly faster than the R1R. If you could get the total grip of the R1R, and the feel of the RS3's, it would sure make it easier to go fast though.

From having a set of Z2's in my hands, I like the looks of them.
