Advice on Buying a Car in NC

Post by TennTechMan »

I'm heading to North Carolina in the morning to buy a car. This is a private party sale.

The guy asked me about getting a notary involved. Apparently, for private party North Carolina to North Carolina sales, you need a notary on the title. I've never needed that in Tennessee, so I assume that I won't need one for this title transfer either.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I really don't want to drive all the way out there to find out I can't actually complete the sale tomorrow.

Thanks.

I bought a truck in ky which requires a notory I the title. They didn't seem to care a ton in tn when I went to register. I basically said I had what I had and they were ok with that

The notary is for the seller. If he will play dumb and sign it you might get away with it. The seller is the one that could have it come back and bite him.

When I told him I didn't need the notary in Tennessee, he didn't seem worried about it. Sounds like I'll be OK. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have a car that I can't register.

I'm buying a SVT Contour. Thinking about getting rid of the Focus. This would be the new DD.

My experience was the same as Gary's; TN didn't care.

Now whether they let it slip or it really doesn't matter is a different question. TN is not a notary state for certain.

Yeah, I helped a friend buy an NC car recently. No notary, no problem registering in TN.

You already have half of an SVT Contour, are just buying the other half?

if you just want to dot all the T's and cross all the i's .. then do the transfer at his bank ... pretty much any of them will do the notary for no charge ... then you're covered no matter what

Couldn't find any banks open on Sunday afternoon. I'll find out in a week or two if it's an issue when I try to register. As others have indicated though, I don't expect it to be an issue.

I already sold the unused half of the silver car. On the way back from NC last night, I had that guy on the phone already asking about buying back a few parts off the silver (half-car) to use on the new red car.

Having owned a SVT, are you really sure you want to do that???? Great car until work has to be done on the motor then a real PITA. I sold mine to buy the GTO and have never regretted the sale. The buyer got hit while delivering pizza and got a decent check.
