a question for the miata heads

Post by CobraJim »

I'm thinking about getting another car. Mostly for transportation but also as a backup autocross car for those times I've got the cobra in pieces. As far as miatas go is there a year or option package that I should look for. Is there anything I should avoid?

That depends on what class you may want to run andddd your price range. Since the answer is always miata, all miatas have a place to go in the world of racing!

Avoid the typical car issues, as I'm sure you're familiar with. Avoid short-nose cranks on early 1.6s (89-mid 91), look and ask for a long-nose crank. That issue can be verified with the VIN.

Yea. My race car will still be the cobra. Like I said this is just a backup and mostly transport. But thanks for the short nose crank tip I'll keep that in mind. As for price. I don't know. Can I get a good car for 5-6 grand?

You can get a great miata for 5-6k! I'd suggest driving a couple to see which model you like the best NA/NB and even some higher mileage NCs in that range.

$1-5K NA 90-97+ are ligher, tighter to fit in and have cool pop up head lights, $2-8KNB-1 are stronger, longer and more room, $3500-8K NB-2 are my favorite to daily, more refined, quieter have VVT which improves torque. any of the ones with ABS are a better model with sport brakes and suspension. Many love Mazda Speed's for the thrill of a small turbo ABS and the rest of a sport package. i'd be happy to help you find a good one as i'm deep in the flow. there are NC's but few of us modders have gone there yet.

The NA's are the ones that look like cartoon cars.
The NB's are the ones that look like an FD RX7 after Bigfoot drove over it.
The NC's are the ones that look like a giant bar of soap with wheels and fender flares. They are '06-??? models.

If you are thinking about a Miata. I'll let you drive mine some time. It should be a fair representation of what a Miata is capable of.

Ha. Eric yours is hardly typical of a miata. Maybe outer level performance. That said I'd love to drive it. Your welcome to take a spin in my old school muscle car. Just try not to beat me to bad in my own car.....

My blue 06 car may be for sale soon.
