Possible site in Elizabethton

Post by scottgib »

James Barker called me last week with a lead on a parking lot belonging to a car dealer. It is located on 321 before the EHS.

The best approach to contact James and then go through the car dealer's lawyer who has a personal interest in autoX'ng.

Barker's business phone number is (423) 543-4047

1. Does anyone know anything about the lot? I couldn't find anything on Virtual Earth (Google doesn't have any high res maps of Elizabethton) that looked large enough.

2. Dave Dillow -- can you contact James?

If I can be of help, just let me know. I could go check it out after work one afternoon.

Try using MapQuest; they (amazingly enough) have considerably more detailed photos for more rural areas when compared to Google Maps.

MapQuest is good. I was very surprised.

I still could not find a site really large enough on 321 before the school. Maybe some land got paved since the aerial photo was taken?

The only lot before EHS is one of Grinstaff's lots. It's been empty for a while but I think they're moving their Ford "used car" inventory there. I had noticed it but it's really much too small.

Doug, if you can contact James and scout the site, that would be very much appreciated. I'm covered up at work preparing to be out of town next week, so I just don't have the time right now. :(

Thanks!

So I went by there today . . . sorry, but it won't work
The lot is just way too small. It is at best a 300' per side triangle.

When I spoke with James he mentioned the airport as another possibility. I don't think it will work either. I didn't see any large paved apron, so we would have to use just the runways. I have run on runway only autocrosses (Danville VA) but it was more than twice as wide (using MapQuest). In both cases there are marker lights just off the pavemet and I have seen them taken out before

Sorry no good news here, but I will be glad to check out any other possible sites in the area.

Thanks Doug. Did you tell Barker, or should I call him?

Thanks Doug for taking this on. I really appreciate it. Too bad about the lot, though.

What about the parking lot at the high school there across from Walmart?
I've seen auto-x events held there before. It's about the same size as walter state and has a decent area for staging. Does anyone know who organized the prior events there?

We did. I chaired one of them. It's a pretty big lot, but it also has it's share of poles and a couple drains to deal with. I liked running there.
