Paved Oval Discovered in Chattanooga

Post by disneyd »

A guy I work with in Chattanooga sent me this:

Link to: TerraServer
All I know is that at one time TVA was using it for their electric car program. You can actually see the track if you are going southbound on HWY 153 just after crossing the dam. It looks a little grown up, but the surface looks pretty good, from what I can tell. Here are some directions that should put you pretty close to it:

From I-75 Southbound, take Exit 7 (Lee Hwy/Bonny Oaks). You will proceed to a red light. Turn RIGHT onto Bonny Oaks. You will continue down that road for a few miles. You will come to HWY 153, take 153 NORTH for just 2 or 3 miles. You will see an exit for Amnicola Highway. Get off on that exit and take Amnicola Highway SOUTH. The entrance should be on the right just before you get to Chattanooga State Community College.
I doubt its something we or Chatt region could use (but it may not have walls) because of SCCA site policies. I just thought it was cool to find an abandoned track somewhere. Oh, and it is banked.

I'll find out what Chatt knows about the site. It might not be "legal" for Solo II but there are other uses.

And jsut because SCCA won't sanction an event there doesn't mean others can't

My grandfather rode a bicycle around there once. He had a friend that worked there sneek him in. I think it's pretty overgrown now, so I would imagine thay're not using it. Then again, they probably wouldn't let anyone else use it. Couldn't hurt to ask.

My very vague recollection of the site is that the "TVA oval track" is narrow and has at least some swamp areas around it that would be problematic, recent tree growth could also be a problem--- I Havn't seen the area in years , may be there has been a change to the positive??

No. In fact, your description is the same one that I got when I inquired about the "track" with the Chatt Region officials.
