I RECONNECTED THE STOCK AIR BOX AND HAVE A ?

Post by oldmuscle69 »

THE MIATA WAS HAVING SOME SORT OF LIQUID COMMING OUT THE TAIL PIPE. NOW AFTER I LET IT CYCLE A FEW TIMES WITH THE STOCK AIR BOX HOOKED UP IT HAS STOPPED THE LIQUID FROM THE TAIL PIPE. i THOUGHT SINCE I HAD LET IT RUN WITHOUT THE REAL COOLING FAN HOOKED UP IT MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM. I DID INSTALL A MASS AIR FLOW METER FROM A PROT0GE OR WHAT EVER YOU CALL THEM 93 YEAR AUTOMATIC. BUT SINCE I RECONNECTED THE AIR BOX THE LIQIUD DISCHARGE HAS STOPPED. ANYONE HAVE A CLUE? NOW i'M SORT OF GLAD I DONT HAVE TO TAKE THE ENGINE APART.THE ENGINE FAN CYCLES LIKE A CHAMP NOW. SEEMS TO ME THE AIR FLOW METER WITHOUT AN AIR BOX SCREWED WITH THE ECM AND CAUSED THE LIQUID FROM THE TAIL PIPE. ANYONE HAVE AN ANSWER OR A FEW TIPS?

What kind of liquid are we talking? Didn't you say coolant in the other thread?

If it was coolant, the problem is still there. With the wrong MAF, it could have been running so rich, that you saw fuel coming out of the tail pipe. That's a little bit unlikely though.

I assume all of this is just running/idling the car in the driveway/garage. Are you sure it wasn't just condensation? Like Aaron said, if it WAS coolant, that probably isn't going to go away.

Why are you yelling at us?

I've never seen a protege MAF work with a 1.6. RX-7's are fairly common though, not legal for STS but whatevs.

You need to do a compression test just to double check your head isn't warped.

Sounds like condensation. Did the level of the radiator drop any? If not that I wouldn't be too worried about it.

So far have seen no drop in coolant level. I'm going to put the stock maf on the car and see what happens. But on same note the one on it now is not over fueling (no black smoke or fuel smell) and the engine likes it.

Off the MAF deal now. Is the upper front ball joint a press fit into the upper cont arm and the spindle holds it tight? The more I take apart the the more dead I find. I guess this is normal since the car has 165K on it.

You did see the pictures of the bushings here: http://www.etrscca.org/etrsccaforum/vie ... f=3&t=7141, right? You got some work to do.

According to the Miata factory service manual the upper control arm & ball joint are not separable - there is a procedure for replacing the boots:
http://mazdaracers.com/topic/1758-upper ... msearch__1

The upper ball joint isn't available separately through MazSpeed, only the UCA assembly complete with ball joints & bushings. For 90-97 the UCA # is NA01-34-200A for both left & right ($209 each). The boot # is NA01-34-548 $6 each).

Well I guess I have some work to do. Thanks for the link, I havent looked at the rear yet. I'll check the upper and make sure it does not have slop. Then think on a plan. But on same note if any of you A/X-Track guys have a shock package for sale that dont look like it came from upper New York and not so over used it dont work but looks good, I would like to know. Or at least some springs and collars could also help out.
