Springs???

Post by rocket71 »

I am looking for a spring supplier. Preferably, hyperco. The place I bought from last time is out for 3 weeks minimum. Thanks.

I usually just buy ERS from Summit. Basically, I think about a rate, then a box shows up at Aaron's in a few minutes.

I think Strano carries Hyperco.

In stock depending on what sizes you need. Hyperco also has a dealer page that lists who has online shopping.

The CRX had Afco springs from the local dirt-track supplier. It was easy. I had them the next day.

Another spring question, other than minimal weight advantage is there really any difference between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2" springs? Also, what needs to be taken into account when deciding between 6", 7" or 8" springs.

minimum weight savings and in some cases the 2 1/4 are heavier due to winds to make specs. Length is determined by usage.. tire clearance, coil binding vs travel.. there is some weight savings with shorter coils...but not much

Check Westhaven Auto Parts. They had a good supply that last time that I was looking for springs. They are a circle track shop so they will have more inventory in the weights that those guys typically run on their cars.
Essentially the spring length will determine where the spring seat sits on the shock/strut. Each car may present its own individual challenge for configuration based upon packaging. Personally I was very uncomfortable with the spring seat sitting very high on the strut.

Steve and I have been through this recently. You basicly want the shortest, largest diameter spring that you can fit to keep the spring away from your shock body. It's simple column theory. Which is more stable, trying to compress a piece of spaghetti at its ends or trying to compress a piece of rigatoni at its ends?

For diameter, make sure you're running the spring your perches are designed for. If you have options and the space for them, larger diameter would be better.

Why is that? Not saying you're wrong, but I'm curious what the concern is.

So many decisions. I am having difficulty finding the rates I want in 2 1/4. Given what you said John I don't think I am going to sweat it. The car currently has 2.5" so there isn't any fitment issues in regards to space around the shock.

I see what you are saying about spring length vs perch location on the shock body. I believe I am going to split the difference and go 7". I really don't want to go 6" and have to think about helper springs.

Spring length won't change whether you need helpers or not. Ride height, suspension droop, and spring rate determines that.

Helper springs are normally used when custom shocks are not used. And the travel of the shaft exceeds the length of the spring. Shortened race dampers normally dont need assist springs.

I am not sure that I can explain it in a correct technical manner but having the spring seat at the top of the shock/strut would seem to place a lot of stress on a small area of the shock/strut that is not well supported by the body of the shock/strut. Again a longer spring places the spring seat closer to the bottom of the shock/strut and has the length of the shock/strut to support the spring.
