Motor not happy :(

Post by EliseAutoXr »

Well, I dropped my car off to a shop in Kansas City on Saturday morning to install and tune a new TVS 1320 setup with charge cooler. The did a baseline "before" dyno, only 180 rwhp... I felt like it didn't "go" like it used to, but wasn't for sure. Anyway, as it turns out the cams are wiped (who knew lobes were important?)... this is a common issue in the 05 and 06 models. Then they found that boost control valve was floppy wore out (due to needle bearings on the non-used side falling out at some point in the past). Here are some pics if anyone is interested...

The good news is that it passed the leak down test ... yeah!

Looks like it's in good hands based on all the other Loti there.

Ditto. At least your cams aren't impossible to remove with the motor in the car.

Will this add extra time to their work...?

Bummer, but at least it isn't a problem in the bottom end.

How hard is it to remove the rear shell to get easy access to the engine?

I had read that lobes were a big issue with the 05-06 cars but most of those seemed to be "tracked" cars which spent substantial time in the high rpm range. I am a little surprised that your car with the SC would have the issue. Good Luck!
Dave, once you have done either of the clams and know where the applicable bolts are(and what wrenches to use) removing the clam isnt a big deal. Having the extra set of hands to remove and install is good but otherwise, it is just time.

The car looks pretty crazy without the rear clam.

Getting this sorted out will be like getting a new S/C all over again!

So, 05-06 would be the best chance for bad motor, good chassis for cheap?????

Bummer but at least it appears to be a fairly easy fix.

Before you use your new lobes, might want to read this and study up on zinc additives...

I am surprised that they don't appear to have been using some sort of a roller follower in that engine.

It will be even better because the new setup will be ~300 rwhp on the same dyno... The car on the lift has 400 rwhp... I'm waiting until next year to do that to mine (hehe, j/k).

The shop that is doing the work has a product called the clam hinge (the car on lift has it on it and is open) that allows the entire rear clam to open like a hood on a car... I'm not in there enough to need that yet, I hope :).

They have already replaced the cams so minimal additional time.

I will forward the link to them, thanks.

Looked like that was mostly regarding break-in, but...

I would be very hesitant to run non-roller tappets or followers without a zinc additive (post break-in).

I'm not at all certain the synthetic oils are satisfactory in that application (post break-in).

Just FYI,

So you are coming out with like 40% more HP? That's gonna be ridiculous.
