So I am shipping an engine across the country and have to packag it up. Do most people just strap it to a pallet or should it be crated?
I was thinking just strap it to a pallet.
Where can I get that industrial type strapping/banding?

Re: Shipping an engine
Tire under the oil pan. Wrap anything sensitive in carboard to protect it. Wrap whole thing in several garbage bags.
I've seen banding material at northern, but it will need to be the steel kind.

Re: Shipping an engine
The times I've shipped stuff on pallets (including a few engines), I've gone to Lowe's and bought the cheapest ratchet straps they had to use as strapping. It's just always seemed easier than trying to deal with metal banding that I don't own tools for. The ratchet straps are about $10 for a 4-pack. If the motor is an inline 4, don't be afraid to lay it on it's side. As long as you drain the fluids, it'll be fine and much more stable.

Back in the day, SCCA Enterprises shipped me several Sports Renault engines bolted to the pallet. Nothing further. I would think that the end user would appreciate more packing in the shipping process so wrapped and strapped would be better but not necessary.

Arron has the right idea, pallet, tire fluids drained and wrapped and exhaust side down unless it is a boxer. Use the four ten buck ratchet straps and let it ship.

Cool. It is an old flat 4 from a '67 Porsche so it will sit nice on the pallet. I'll probably just ratchet strap it on, and wrap in a few trash bags and packing tape just to keep things together.
Thanks for the input.
