Car Question
Car Question
I Have been considering buying a dedicated Autox car for a while now and have been looking for something more fun than my boat Maxima. I want to stay FWD (because I'm more comfortable FWD) and mainly just smaller than my Maxima. I Have recently had a friend decide he wants to sell his STOCK(I know its pretty hard to believe) Honda Del sol Si. The Question Is are these ok cars for autox? I assume that there would be a lot of aftermarket and factory parts considering its basically a two seat civic.

Re: Car Question
It would be fun (probably), but I don't think they are widely considered to be very competitive. I would say embrace your RWD fears and go with a Miata.

Re: Car Question
They are a little heavy compared to other cars they tend to run against. There have been a few people that have thought they could make a prepared class car out of them but nobody has done one yet. You would need a truck and trailer for a real prepared class car.

Re: Car Question
I am mainly looking for a fun time (may eventually become competitive) but I want something that I wont go broke on trying to tinker with. I am wanting stock so I can grow with it. This is mostly going to be a fun thing for me and my son to tinker with.(some of my best memories of my father were at the racetrack)
I'm looking to stay below $3500-$4000 for a stock car.

Re: Car Question
Yeah you can get a pretty good Miata all day long for that money, and a Miata can be competitive in street, street touring, street prepared, and on up the chain.

Re: Car Question
Honda Civic's and CRX's fit the bill also .. plus he said he liked FWD … glad to have another true believer

Re: Car Question
The Del Sol is probably amongst the worst of the double wishbone Hondas that you can choose for this stuff. In addition to being heavy for what it is, it has a ridiculously flexible chassis.

Re: Car Question
Thanks I will have to do some more research on some Honda's (Hard part is finding one that doesn't have some crappy "getto" lowering kit or an engine swap done by a 16 year old and his friends) but I will look deeper into it. Still don't really want a Miata (I haven't driven a RWD car in 10 years and that was a truck) but I will keep it in mind and I'm not totally against it.

Re: Car Question
I could possibly sell my car in a configuration that wouldn't put it too far from that price range.

Re: Car Question
I know of an NA Miata for sale. It is not so pretty, but it is in one piece. straight body teenage owned. Audio is missing, manual trans newer rubber on alloy.Your 3500/4500 will make every mod you want and also get the bug killer smoking engine fixed or replaced and have a few $ left over. How copy, wanna race? I will recheck this weekend and see if still on the table.

Re: Car Question
What Steve said about the Del Sol having a flexible chassis is an under statement. My brother had one for a while. It was so flexible that as we took the removable roof out, you could see the car flex while it was sitting still.

Re: Car Question
Finally took the plunge and bought something to race. I was hoping to get something stock but ended up getting an 89 Honda hatch with some things already done. Won't make it to Chilhowee ( I want to check some things with it before I race) but I hope to be out for Sept @ pellissippi. Probably run stm class first until I figure out what class fits best maybe STS or STC.
