No I have had both a gas powered truck and a diesel and the diesel gets way better mileage than my truck did and now that it has a tuner on it I was able to go 991 miles on 39 gallons of diesel and that left me with 5 gallons still in the tank, granted that was not towing but I was only able to go 640-670 on a tank without towing before the tuner and I am waiting to see how well it does while towing with the tuner on it.

Agreed on the diesel Excursion if:
You don't mind paying a premium for an older diesel truck and
You can find one in decent shape without a bajillion miles on it.
Both are much more common these days.
Miles schmiles. Diesels go forever. And Diesel Excursions are still one of the nicest trucks ever made (though the latest crop of trucks is surpassing it quickly as it ages). I'll still never give mine up, though. I don't get as good mileage as JY, but I'll take it over a gas truck every day.
All that said, Aaron has the answer - rent an RV for the weekend and you've got it all.
I have dealt with a lot of equipment sales with work and big rigs go fairly cheaply at auction. We liquidated a tobacco farmer a few years ago and sold several Peterbilts that all went for less than 10K (with sleeper cabs). My condo board would have a shit fit if one of those showed up in guest parking. Fortunately I live in a condo where people like to fornicate in the pool, have ultralight aircraft, and leave bass boats in their driveways - so the dude with four cars flys under the radar screen.
