Stm tires

Post by jcox07 »

If you run stm, tell me your tire situation. Meaning what tires are you running right now and do you have any tires in the garage that you will be running when your present ones are done, this doesn't count new tires that you may be about to purchase, just used ones that you got from someone to run in our stm class.

I don't plan on being at every event but i would like to attend a few next year. Depending on co-driver situation, maybe enough to have the minimum 7 events under my belt.

I run Federal 595RSRs which are an extremely generous 140tw. I think that it is common knowledge that they are pretty subpar to their notorious 200TW rivals (no pun intended). ie. Z2, rs3, 71r.

What's the issue with letting people in STM run 140tw tires? I mean all the data seems to show that the Bridgestones are a better tire at 200tw (kinda makes you question the applicability of a treadwear standard), but what would STM stand to gain from being forced into a 200tw tire? Most (almost all) of us can't participate outside the region with our car prep anyway.

I think that the STM guys will still be buying take-offs from ST classes anyway. Speaking of, if you have some Bridgestone take-offs in 15/195 or 205, let me know.

There's no issue in running 140's at all in my opinion. It's what the class wants and the 140 tires are no faster than the 200's.

As I've always said the only problem might be if an STM competitor travels to another region. It might be likely that their rule is 200.

This could be an issue with a new person, but in all honesty if you're new and running STM it's because you didn't build your car for an autocross class or you are just coming out for some fun. If anyone is seriously building an STM car then they should already be aware of those implications going into other regions.

If you are buying take offs from the st guys then you are buying 200 tw as they can not run 140 tw.

Yeah, considering I get beat on my "pixie dust" Toyos by the 200tw stuff I see no difference in letting people run cheap Federals or other cost effective 140tw tires in STM.

TW ratings are so subjective it's not even funny...

Regardless, I'm currently on some almost gone first gen Rivals. The times I plan to run STM, I'll be on those and whatever discount rubber I can pick up off forums.

Yeah, most of your more serious STM cars here would be thrown into some kind of high-prep race tire class, anyway. So it's still not really an issue.
