Re: STM tire rule.
I dont think any 140 tire can compete with the new generation 200 tw tires.

Is Bridgestone coming out with any new sizes this year in the RE71R?
Re: STM tire rule.
I have 15x9 inch rims in the back. 15x8 in the front. If I run STM what tire would be good. I know nothing about the current street tires.

Re: STM tire rule.
I don't think anyone makes a 140TW ST tire anymore. Federal quit making the RSR, everyone thought their new RSRR would still be 140, but it was 200 when it came out. Bridgestone still has leftovers of it's old 140tw RE70's out on tire rack but that's not going to be competitive. Same with Kumho's old 180 XS. I'm thinking the only sub 200tw ST tire still really being made are Yoko AD08R's. Guess there wasn't enough worry there to rebrand them as 200's.

Alright, I'll throw something further out there.
I think the only thing I can get in a 315 - 17" is the Nitto NT05 @ 200tw.
Jim and I ran a set of R888s (100tw) on his car a few years ago, which I enjoyed quite a lot (nice audible feedback, but nothing that indicated "autocross world beater").
So, an alternate proposal - 100tw minimum for STM?
Just floating an idea - or I could put NT05s on and be legal (eventually) for CAM-S (or STM immediately)....

Re: STM tire rule.
There was some concern with having cheap 140tw tires after last year but, that never seem to come about. I think maybe 2 sets were even sold from the dedicated street guys and a few ran STM because they didn't want to buy/back ordered 200tw tires. I think letting 100tw stuff in is an interesting thought. I don't know much about tires in that segment but I could see me running something like that on my car. Like an NT01 or R888. Not sure how much participation I will have with the club next year and I still have plenty of life left on my Rival's. I would be ok with that move towards 100tw for STM, though.
Re: STM tire rule.
I forgot that opens up the NT01 (in 315-17) too - never ran on them, but I do have fond memories of Jim's R888s....
And I'm not sure how much participation I'm up for next year either (former pelli guy)....

Re: STM tire rule.
The r888 would work. I can get 235's in them.

Re: STM tire rule.
A lot of people, myself included, were still on 140tw Federals at the time those rules were being discussed.thrdeye wrote:MARKP wrote: There was at the time. But I think that revolved around a couple of cheap tires coming to market, and the fact that used 140's were still available. I think it's been decided that those cheap 140's were kind of crappy? Maybe?
I think it's pretty much moot now, but I don't think it's going to affect anything if it stays 140. 140s are slow nowadays....stupid, arbitrary utgq ratings.
Chad: I would run the RE71s or the new Rival S, in 205 or 225, respectively.
EDIT: I would be ok with 100tw being allowed as well. Based on my RC1s at the final Pelli event, I don't think that would give anyone am unfair advantage either. Most 100tws are designed for track use and lots of heat, kind of like an r7 vs an a7 (which the 200tw stuff tends to mimic).
I have no desire to run a full season with Pelli gone, but I'd be more likely to show up with my track tires being legal in STM.

I'm going to call that a pretty enthusiastic response so far - I'm going to let it percolate here for a while unless somebody is in a big hurry to make a 2017 tire decision.
Anyone have objections or other concerns?
My plan would be to send it to the 2017 solo committee in January after the Christmas party, assuming we haven't found any major objections or problems by then.

Re: STM tire rule.
What are the prices of "the" 100TW tire to have compared to the average BS or BFG or Kumho??

Re: STM tire rule.
I probably wouldn't support lowering the treadwear rating. Whether or not the 100 tires are faster in practice, I think it changes the feel and perception of the class and the initial concept.
What I might support is a race tire catch all, but there's no reason that can't just be XP.

Re: STM tire rule.
Isn't there a pretty large difference between an R7 and a 100tw tire? Also not sure if any of the cars are xp legal really. I would need to trim back aero, add weight, buy back interior pieces....I would probably just stick to STM and do what Lucas did and DFQ myself if I decide to buy some track type tires for next years attempt at some HPDE.
Re: STM tire rule.
R-comps take away from the spirit of Street Tire Modified. I think it would encourage more trailering/tire-swapping for the class as well. Put it at 200 TW, a Rival-S or RE71R is going to be faster than a RC-1, NT01, R888, RA1 anyways. Plus STM wouldn't be SOL if they drive on them to the event and it rains on the way home.

Re: STM tire rule.
Yeah, it's about 3-4 seconds on a n/a miata on track, less for power cars. No idea with autox, everybody runs A7s, but the A7 is only 0.3 to 0.5 sec faster than a R7 on track.90civichb wrote:Isn't there a pretty large difference between an R7 and a 100tw tire?
