Data/Camera set up

Post by John Brown »

Im redoing my data set up and so far,I only have the SOLO STORM and the GPS and the OBD2 connector..

I have been talking to JY cause his seems to work well.. I have also looked at Harps and I like that I can get outside the car shots..

Im not tech savvy so what do I need or what do I not want to get?? Which GoPro? I have a great deal on a HERO+

I seen a wire going to Harps outside GoPro... what is that? battery? HDMI ? I also need t get it set up prior to this Sat..

thanks for any advise!

Have you tried talking to Steve Hoelscher about video data logging? :|

You could hang your tablet outside the car to get those outside shots with solostorm

I think the go pro 3 or higher supports solo storm and Mark Pilson I think knows which one of the go pros works well.

I wonder if his view of the system will change now that he's no longer with them.

RaceKeeper is good. It is just kind of a lot of information to deal with in a limited time.

I'm pretty anti-data, but I'm thinking about something for Pros.

Have you looked on the SoloStorm web site? They should have a list of compatible action cameras. You want one that can be controlled remotely by WiFi or Bluetooth. Camera batteries don't last all that long. You may need a wire for power. Then there's transferring the video to your tablet. Wireless transfer can be slow. I use an adapter that reads the SD card from the camera.

me too Steve.. I never really ran data for A-X... but all my reference points are waaay off in the BIG car... what feels fast just isnt quick.

Time to play data games.

I have never tried pairing my GoPros with SoloStorm but I plan to try it this year. All of mine are 3+. Probably all of mine need new batteries too.

My Setup:
Google Nexus 7 tablet
GoPro Hero 4
External Mic
SoloStorm

The wire for mine is an external mic so that I don't get wind noise. I think it's a necessity. It really helps you hear the throttle on video and in doing so gives you some audible data to compare how long you were on the throttle in certain areas. Also helps pick up wheelspin/squeal. The battery in the mic usually lasts me a whole year and the mic was about $20 on amazon.

You would need an adapter for the go pro's USB input as well as the GoPro "Skeleton" case so that you can hook the mic into the camera. The basic case fully encloses the GoPro and doesn't give you access.

Compare this to any AX vid without and external mic. https://youtu.be/eA-6y6WRJ_k

I do like the simplicity of JY's integrated video on the tablet, but the angle doesn't allow you to see the driver, and that's a big minus in my book. It's also low res If you have to have video you use the GoPro and can sync it up after the event.

Hanging with Palotta and Herbst at Bristol really helped me learn how to quickly analyze data.

Dave Ogburn has his go pro linked to solo storm and can watch it after each run, not sure how he has done that but it is doable.

Yep, it will auto-sync and import over wifi, but you have to import the low res otherwise it takes forever. It kills your battery though, and you have to wait for it. I'd rather have an extra 5-10 mins to look at data than wait on the video, but some people make it work for them. I can't stand to be too hectic between runs at big events.
