e92 M3 / 6th Gen Mustang Questions
e92 M3 / 6th Gen Mustang Questions
I'm looking for a kid hauler to replace the Z4. I've found a few e92 M3s that are candidates but the whole rod bearing issue is giving me pause. Anyone on here have any experience with those cars, and are the problems over blown?
My other selection is a 6th gen Mustang (2015s mostly) - any issues with those? My research on those hasn't revealed anything.
I just want something that I can use as a DD that will fit a car seat, and won't slowly crush my soul. Suggestions that include "buy a minivan", "Ford Fusion", "Toyota Prius" and other assorted FWD shit boxes will be ignored. No, I don't want a Subaru, but thanks for asking.

Re: e92 M3 / 6th Gen Mustang Questions
I've only had to deal with kid seats here and there when I'm tasked with keeping the godson alive for a few hours at a time, but no way I'd want to deal with that in a two door car.
Just a fun DD and not racing it? Focus RS. It's AWD. Good AWD too, from what I understand. And even if you did want to autocross it, they can hold their own. Not necessarily fun in autocross due to the nannies and such. But they go like stink and sound good.
Otherwise, between your two choices, the Mustang is probably the way I'd go. Assuming whatever you get will eventually be filled with cheerios and spilled milk, it's probably cheaper to destroy a Mustang.

Re: e92 M3 / 6th Gen Mustang Questions
I willing to deal with the pain. I'd jump at a Charger but they don't make them with manual transmissions. I could live with M5 / 335 / M3 four door, but its hard to find one with a stick (that doesn't have a million miles on it).
I test drove one at Carmax and hated it. Same thing with the current WRX. The focus had way too much boy racer crap going on too... (I know, ironic from a guy with an e30 M3).
They are on the list, I'm just having an easier time finding Mustangs with sticks.John Brown wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 12:12 pm Id just buy a Grown Ass Mans car and find either a 6.4L Charger or a used Charger Hell Cat. Paul McFall.. you can chime in??
Re: e92 M3 / 6th Gen Mustang Questions
The s65 rod bearings should be done every 80k unless you REALLY like pain. Otherwise, the cars are pretty solid and a lot of fun. I'd probably steer you towards an LCI e90 335. The n55 seems a lot more solid than the n54, but there are still the typical "German" issues to consider. You really can't go wrong either way if you know it's not going to be maintenance-free going in.
The newest Mustangs are pretty nice (especially the GT350R! ), but I wouldn't want to haul a kid in one.

Get a 4 door of some sort. Trust me, you’re gonna really hate a 2 door if you’re dealing with child seats on a regular basis.

6.4 Charger for the win!!!John Brown wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 12:12 pm Id just buy a Grown Ass Mans car and find either a 6.4L Charger or a used Charger Hell Cat. Paul McFall.. you can chime in??
I have had a Mustang when my kids were in car seats. It got traded for a 4 door. fairly quickly.
Most car seats just don't fit in the back seat of the Mustang without moving the front seats all the way up and then it is a serious pain in the ass to get your child in and out. Especially when they can't walk. It may seem like it would work but in practice it's just too painful.
Find a sporty 4 door. You will not regret it. Well you may but you won't realize that you dodged a 2 door bullet.

PS go drive a 6.4 and you will never look back at a manual. The new 8 spd transmission is that good. Especially for a DD.RxCritical wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 8:27 pm6.4 Charger for the win!!!John Brown wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 12:12 pm Id just buy a Grown Ass Mans car and find either a 6.4L Charger or a used Charger Hell Cat. Yeah, that is what I was looking for. I'm used to BMW maintenance issues, but I've been spoiled by the Z4 and how good its been.lcoleman wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 7:36 pm The s65 rod bearings should be done every 80k unless you REALLY like pain. The wife picked up an N55 powered 135i and its been good so far. I've got my eye out for 335 / 135s as well.
4 doors and sticks don't seem to play well. I'd jump at an M5 with a stick if I could find one that didn't have over 100K miles on it.RxCritical wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 8:27 pm6.4 Charger for the win!!!John Brown wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 12:12 pm Id just buy a Grown Ass Mans car and find either a 6.4L Charger or a used Charger Hell Cat. Negative Ghostrider. I test drove a Challenger with an 8 speed gear box and absolutely hated it. It hunts too much for gears and shifts more than my bike. This was a 5.7 car, but I can't see it being much better with a 6.4. I really hate automatics.RxCritical wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 8:29 pmPS go drive a 6.4 and you will never look back at a manual. In theory I actually like SMG equipped cars, but in practice I don't want to deal with the maintenance costs associated with them, especially the increased costs associated with the DCT units.

I have owned both a 5.7 and a 6.4, both with the 8 speeds. They act like completely different transmissions. The 6.4 almost knows exactly what gear you want to be in. But if you really hate auto's (which I understand, but for a daily driver this one is good) then you might also find a used Chevy SS with a manual. I have seen a few locally. When I was looking for the same unicorn I found that the 4 door rear drive manual car is almost exclusively German. Good luck in your search.
Ghostrider out.

I'll have to try out a 6.4 then, my prejudice against autos notwithstanding.RxCritical wrote: ↑Wed May 23, 2018 10:22 amThis.John Brown wrote: ↑Wed May 23, 2018 9:19 am no gear hunt in the 6.4s.. totally different programming. but if ya wanna shift in a DD... do it.

The SS with a six speed is a freaking unicorn, but I'm looking for them too. I like German cars, but it would be nice to just go back to a simple domestic.
