stock class mods?
There is also the issue of properly mounting the shoulder straps. There's no way to mount them in any of my cars without a roll bar. Might not be so important in autocross but is critical on a track. I don't like driving to events with a roll cage next to my head, but the padding on it hurts less that some of the other things in there.

Kenji produces a seatbelt bar specifically for the MR2 which allows mounting of belts at the proper height relative to the driver's shoulders so as to avoid spinal compression. It's not a roll bar though.
Before I'd get into any sort of wheel-to-wheel racing, I would certainly invest in a cage and a HANS. For now, I'm concerned mainly with controlled track days & schools...and autocross of course. I've tried to do my homework with regard the topic on hand, but I'm never one to turn down a more experienced opinion (which would represent most on this board I think.) Hence the inital post.
