It is possible to get occasional one day use of a military base depending on The function of the base and the base commander. It might even be possible to get two days. I think there is a two day event at the Marine Corps LCAC facility in Virginia Beach, but that is the only one I've heard of. Las Vegas Region gets onto Nellis AFB a couple times a year by making a donation to the Airman's Relief Fund. Mississippi Region uses Columbus AFB. In both cases, a form with the names of all persons wanting on base along with a description of all vehicles (tow, trailers, and competition) must be submitted a week or two in advance. The numbers of persons granted access is limited and they are restricted to on route on and off the base. Often they are given a time window to arrive and depart. There is no coming an going as one wishes.

And who said this?

Keep in mind that if we are on the civilian side of the airport, we might not need military approval.

Think we could get a letter of intention or a group (well dressed) to go talk with the airport management of FAA? I would be willing to head this up if well informed on the restrictions and regulations. Can anyone get in contact with the organizers of earlier said airport auto-x's?
See how they went about asking permission to set something up.
If anyone gets any leads or contacts I would be more than happy to speak with them about this.
43-741-5341 cell is always on. call or text.
Thanks,
Jamie

I've got an "in" over at the airport. I've actually ridden in a vehicle on the concrete pad in the SW corner attached the the run way. It's huge, flat, and smooth. It's not being used for anything right now. It's too close to the runway though. They'd have to close the runway or set up armored vehicles around the perimeter for it to not be a security issue. I don't see either happening.

Well, I don't think anyone has ever approached anyone. So Aaron, talk to your guy, see who the honcho is we would need to talk to...and try to figure out what part of that pavement we would be most likely to get on because that is the one we need to pursue.

As I recall, we found the FAA closure regs a few years ago. It can be done but there is lots of red tape. It is worth taking a shot at the civilian side of McGhee-Tyson but as I also recall from my National Guard contact, the event can be shut down if an alert is ordered and this was pre-9/11.

What about Tri City Airport? There are businesses behind the airfield that have access to the runway and taxi areas. Plus it would be a closer drive than Bristol.

The Greeneville Airport has space also, but I have no idea who or how to approach them. It would be good to know how other regions have done it.

The Toledo Pro Solo is held on a section of their airport. Maybe someone that is going to that event could talk to the Toledo locals and see how they get on there. Also, I think Blytheville is a live airport.

Blytheville is a live airport but there isn't much going on there. I only saw a couple of planes moving around and we actually had to stop so one could get around us. I believe the airport is more non-commercial than anything else.

I did some searching and found this group in Wiley Ford, WV that host their events at Cumberland Airport. http://www.nationalroadrally.com/icebreak_09.html
I wouldn't know how to go about asking how they got started. But if someone were to contact them and see how the got around the FAA, maybe we could do the same at McGhee Tyson.
Just a thought. :)

Here's their address
