Eric your going to fly choppers, right?
Yes sir. Going the OCS/Flight route is a long hard road, but it should be worth it in the end
I've got a friend that is getting ready to enlist in the AF (enlisted). I have been talking with him about quite a few different jobs. He wanted something that would give him the best lifestyle on base. IE.... not having to deal with all the BS that young enlisted guys generally do. My suggestion to him was being on a flight crew. Generally you will make E5 (NCO) on a flight crew in about 4 years. Thats pretty quick. I see alot of guys barely make E5 in their 6 year contract. That doesn't mean you can't do it in other jobs, it's just harder. As like John said, it is what you make of it! If you get in there and bust your butt, most of your staff NCO's will see it and help you make rank. It all goes back to how much effort you put in.
Anyways, my suggestion to him was a flight engineer. They are basicly flying crew chiefs. They know the planes/helos inside and out.

Going back to the thought of finishing your degree...... it's a must. It's getting to the point now that you will have trouble getting past E7 without a degree. Most of your senior NCO's have taken the opportunity to go back to school and get their degree. They will be the ones that the board approves to put on the stripes.
Having your degree will also give you the opportunity as you stated to goto OTS and get your commission. This would be a great option if you decided to put 20+ years in.
Senior NCO's also have a very good life on base. So don't count out that option. E8-E9's are very well respected and have quite a bit of pull when it comes to making things happen. Absolutely nothing wrong with going that route.
