that would be the normal interpretation of the rule ... but for some reason they wrote in the 2000 as being ok for this season ...

as long as it's in the rule book for 2016 ... it's good to go, regardless of what is usual or normal

What in the world. I have been under the impression that I would have to get a new helmet for months now! At the same time that's some egg on the face it's nice to know I can put more towards tires this season.

Check out some of the build.

If SA2015 and M2015 helmets had been available in early 2015, that would have been correct. But they weren't. I think this is actually old news. If I weren't feeling miserable from a cold or something, I'd go back the the Fastrak SEB archives for 2015 and see when it was published.

the 2000 ruling came out in a recent FastTrack ... so none of us knew this until recently

The extension of eligibility of Snell 2000 helmets is in the December Fastrack under Tech Bulletins on page 8. So it's fairly recent.

As far as track days, check the sanctioning organization for HPDE (NASA) or PDX/track night (SCCA) rules. Open face and M are allowed for HPDE and PDX. You don't need a fire suit, extinguisher, roll bar, Hans or harness either, but NASA does preach the value of each in mandatory classroom sessions.

Wheel to wheel is a much more serious matter.
