The CAMT changes are actually appealing.

You can take a readily available and affordable car (4th gen Camaro, sn95/new edge Mustang) and run them at reasonable weights.

Way more appealing than dumping $50-100k into a pig and then trying to explain to people that you really shouldn't be more than a couple tenths faster than stock.

Crisis averted? So you dont need to find a different class with stable rules to run?

Well if you take the fastest mustang in F street at nats his time was 139.035 and the fastest F street Camaro was 139.079 and the fastest cam Camaro was 133.234 and fastest mustang in cam was 133.359 and I would venture a guess that the price to go 6 seconds faster was under 10k of what the F street Camaro and mustang had in them.

6 seconds faster than mid-pack in FS.

FS winner was 132.4. So if Leeder or Wong had stuck with FS in a Camaro, CAMC maybe could have beaten them.

I didn't say faster than the F street bmw spec class, I was referring to the fastest Camaro and mustang in f street and no I don't think Jeff Wong would have been in the top 7 in F street.

I'm not really convinced that an M3 is much faster than a pony.

2018: Ido was 8th place, 3.1 seconds out of first. In a Camaro.
2019: Ido was 8th place, 3.0 seconds out of first. In an M3.

If 2019 didn't convince you, I don't know what could/would.

The M3 is a great car, no doubt, and very good at autocross. But what you're seeing is a car that a lot of people lusted after hitting its sweet spot with regard to pricing and reliability, which is commonly why a car becomes dominate in a class. They are at about 30%-40% of their cost when they were new, and are still reliable enough to race.

A few hot shoes tested the M3 vs. the Ponies in 2018 I believe and they were within noise. M3 is probably a little easier to drive, especially if you have the DCT, but that also adds weight. In cases like this, the question really becomes why try anything else when the M3 is a great car that can get it done, looks magnificent, and isn't something everyone and their cousin has.

How about comparing those times to Daddio in a BS Mustang? That would ve a little closer.

Everyone who was quick moved on.

The people that moved from Pony to M3 didn't instantly become quicker. Ido went from 8th in a pony to 8th in an M3. Justin Eckles went from 10th in a pony to 13th in an M3. The guy who was the fastest in a pony this year was slower than 14 other pony car drivers in '18.

I think the M3 is faster, but not by much. If you are fast enough to trophy in FS in an M3, you likely would do so in pony car as well.

So what JY estimates as under $10k in mods (I don't know the car, but I'm sure the body panels and wheels cost several grand) slows you down by .8 seconds!
