What brake pads are you running and why?

Post by Z06Fix »

1. What is your favorite pad and why?

2. What are you currently running on the car and how does it compare to what you have run in the past?

3. What kind of lifespan are you getting out of your pads?

4. How aggressive are they on the rotors?

5. Where do you buy your pads from?

6. Do you prefer a very strong inital bite or a more mild bite?

7. What kind of heat range do you look for in a set of pads?

8. Do you like a very flat torque curve on the pads or do you like something that adds bite as heat and pressure builds?

Please also list the type of car you are using them on.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions :)

This will not do you any good, but:

What: NAPA "True Stop". ~$15/axle (on the MR2)

Why: They are cheap, can lock/ABS the fronts even with hot V710s on the car, and they put up with alot of abuse.

Life Span: ~6mos including autocross use, a couple of trips to the 'gap, and one track weekend at CMP.

Rotor wear: I have not noticed any unusual wear.

Heat Range: Does it look like I have put that much thought into it ? :D  That said, I've never glazed them.

I prefer to be able to brush the pedal and not put myself through the windshield, but I want pretty good bite if I actually depress the pedal deliberately...so however that translates.

1. What is your favorite pad and why? Pagid, they stop real fast...

2. What are you currently running on the car and how does it compare to what you have run in the past? Currently have Pagid, had Porterfield before, they did not work very well all (for me), especially if they were wet!

3. What kind of lifespan are you getting out of your pads? stock pads lasted about 30K miles, I put on the Porterfield and after about 15K miles changed because of the "non-stopping" issue, about 20K on the Pagid.

4. How aggressive are they on the rotors? The Pagid are brutal on the rotors, the Porterfields did not noticably effect the rotors at all.

5. Where do you buy your pads from? Rennstore.com

6. Do you prefer a very strong inital bite or a more mild bite? I prefer very strong initial bite, I like to be running full out, then hit the brakes hard to knock off the speed and then back on throttle

7. What kind of heat range do you look for in a set of pads? that's beyond my skill level, although I do notice that on my second run, the brakes work much better

8. Do you like a very flat torque curve on the pads or do you like something that adds bite as heat and pressure builds? again, beyond my skill level, sorry.

Please also list the type of car you are using them on.

1. Stock - nice and cheap.

2. Stock fronts - 'Vatozone Special rears. I like the initial bite better than the PBR Metal Masters i ran previously.

3. Two years of weekend driving / autocross. Still enough meat for a third season.

4. Not very.

5. Stealership, GM Parts Direct, wherever they are cheap.

6. Strong initial bite.

7. IDK. So long as they stop the car.

8. See above.

1. What is your favorite pad and why?

Carbotech XP8's. Good customer service, plenty of pad choices from street driving all the way to road racing.

2. What are you currently running on the car and how does it compare to what you have run in the past?

I had the XP6's which were nice, but I liked the XP8's better as they held their bite better and longer with heat. The vette came with some crap ceramic pads that would fade if you hit the brakes hard after the 3rd time. They sucked.

3. What kind of lifespan are you getting out of your pads?

I've still got the XP's in my garage after using them for 6-7 autoX events and one open track event.

4. How aggressive are they on the rotors?

Never saw any wear on my rotors at all. Still looked new from the day that I bought them.

5. Where do you buy your pads from?

www.pfyc.com

6. Do you prefer a very strong inital bite or a more mild bite?

Strong initial bite so I can drive the car deep into a corner or to out brake someone going into a turn.

7. What kind of heat range do you look for in a set of pads?

Haven't looked into this much. I just need them to last an entire race when I get into T1/ST2.

8. Do you like a very flat torque curve on the pads or do you like something that adds bite as heat and pressure builds?

See above.

I'm with JB on this one. Crappy brakes work best on a Miata. I run EBC greens on the back though because they tend to have a little better bite than OEM organics. As for wear on the rotors, I've been running the same rotors for about 3 years now.

1. What is your favorite pad and why?
I haven't run enough different pads to have a favorite, but am happy with what I'm using now.

2. What are you currently running on the car and how does it compare to what you have run in the past?
Assuming you are talking about for autocross. I am running Wilwood "A" pads on the fronts and PFC pads on the rears. I have run Hawk HPS on the fronts before, but that was with the stock brakes. I have only run the Wilwood A compound and the Wilwood "E" compound with this front "big brake" setup (13.1" slotted rotors and Wilwood 6-piston calipers). I like the "A" compound better for autocross. Running PFCs on the rear because there are very few performance pad options for this car, but they work well. I also run this combo on the street.

I switch to Wilwwod "E" or "H" compounds for road course depending on how long I will be lapping. If 10 minutes or less - the "E" pads go on. For extended sessions longer than that - the "H" pads go on.

3. What kind of lifespan are you getting out of your pads?
I have about 6000 miles on the fronts and they are approximately 1/3 to 1/2 gone - so 12,000 to 18,000 miles on the fronts. I have 20,000 miles on the rear pads and they still have about 50% of their life left, so life should be about 40,000 miles.

4. How aggressive are they on the rotors?
Not aggressive at all on the rotors - very good rotor life from both compounds. I'm not had to have front or rear rotors turned since these pads went on.

5. Where do you buy your pads from?
Whoever has the best price at the momment - local or internet sources - I price around.

6. Do you prefer a very strong inital bite or a more mild bite?
Strong initial bite

7. What kind of heat range do you look for in a set of pads?
Here is the heat graph for the Wilwood "A" pads that I am using.

http://brakepads.wilwood.com/02-graphs/a.gif

8. Do you like a very flat torque curve on the pads or do you like something that adds bite as heat and pressure builds?
For me, as flat and linear as possible for autocross.

Please also list the type of car you are using them on.

1. What is your favorite pad and why?

Stock. Easier to modulate.

2. What are you currently running on the car and how does it compare to what you have run in the past?

Stock. Less initial bite, but easier to modulate.

3. What kind of lifespan are you getting out of your pads?

I tend to replace cars more often than brakes.

4. How aggressive are they on the rotors?

See above.

5. Where do you buy your pads from?

car salesman

6. Do you prefer a very strong inital bite or a more mild bite?

Mild.

7. What kind of heat range do you look for in a set of pads?

Not something I think about for autocross...

8. Do you like a very flat torque curve on the pads or do you like something that adds bite as heat and pressure builds?

See above.

1. What is your favorite pad and why?

I haven't really tried enough of them to have a favorite.

2. What are you currently running on the car and how does it compare to what you have run in the past?

Ferodo DS2500. Comparable to the stock Brembo pads in performance, but better wearing. See http://www.raceshopper.com/ferodo_compounds.shtml

3. What kind of lifespan are you getting out of your pads?

Stock pads lasted a year, ~14k miles. Still on the Ferodos at 90k.

4. How aggressive are they on the rotors?

Not bad, but I'll probably replace them with the next pad change.

5. Where do you buy your pads from?

http://www.raceshopper.com

6. Do you prefer a very strong inital bite or a more mild bite?

Firm but constant.

7. What kind of heat range do you look for in a set of pads?

Streetable, so nothing that requires too much heat.

8. Do you like a very flat torque curve on the pads or do you like something that adds bite as heat and pressure builds?

Bite better damned well be better with more pressure. Temperature is a compromise in a street/autox or street/track car.

Please also list the type of car you are using them on.
