Newb

Post by maximus31 »

I have done a few autox sessions in the past and am going to be hitting up quite a few this year. I was reading the rule book and was hoping to run in SM but if I am reading it correctly there is a 245mm tire and 8" wide wheel restriction correct? The wheels are 17x9 I have and will be getting 255mm-275mm tires. What class would this bump me into? I assume prepared? the vehicle is a 1998 GSX.

Wheels and tires are open in SM. Whatever you can get under the fenders.

...or whatever will fit without modifying the inner fender.

Ok sweet. I didn't see anything else then that will be illegal or questionable.

Umm, you can remove a non-metallic inner fender, flare the existing fender or use an aftermarket fender:

I. Front hoods (engine covers), engine covers, trunk lids and hatches
not containing glass, front fenders, rear fenders not part of chassis
structure (unibody), front & rear facias, and side skirts may be modified
or replaced, and may be attached with removable fasteners.
Associated hardware including latches, hinges, and window washer
nozzles may be modified, removed, or replaced. This does not permit
removal of the remainder of the window washer system. Fenders
may be flared as per Street Prepared. Non-metallic fender liners may
be modified, replaced, or removed.

Ok. I am even more confused after reading more. Mods that should effect my class status

98 Eclipse GSX (AWD)
GC Coilover setup 450/400 with koni yellows
Spherical Strut tower mounts
Subframe bushings in rear are aluminum as well as diff bushings
Suspension bushings are poly
Wheels are 17x9
Brakes up front are cobra 13" rotors and calipers are 4 piston 3000gt vr4
All factory glass, body panels.
Bigger sway bars
Fmic of course
Stroker 2.3 liter
No weight reduction other than emissions equipment
A/C is removed but heat is still in place.
Full exhaust no cat

Where does this put me?

Should be in SM unless your suspension upgrades don't use the stock suspension pickup points. You can also run STM (no limits to modifications) provided you run a 'street' tire (140 treadwear or higher).

It does have all stock suspension points. Which class typically has slower cars? I will probably enter that one.

That depends on who shows up on any given day. :lol2: Both STM and SM have fast drivers, but neither class has a car fully prepped to the rules. Locally, both classes shake out to 'run what you brung', its just that one uses R compounds and the other doesn't.

You can run Novice if you run SM, which means that in addition to competing against the SM cars, your time will be paxed (mathematical formula used to compare different classes) and measured against other novices. Basically, its a good opportunity to win more shirts.

You cant run Novice and STM at the same time (STM doesn't have a PAX score).

If you are coming out this weekend, and you aren't afraid I'll destroy your motor (I rip through LS1s like the cheap soda cans that they are) I'll co-drive with you and you can have those tires you want from me for free.

Can't make it till probably May. I am putting the finishing touches on the car (aka getting it to run again). I would appreciate the co driver and will take you up on it soon as it is "road worthy".
