Yesterday (Monday, May 7), the Atlanta City Council voted to amend the city sound ordinance to specifically ban organized drifting within 1,000 yards of any residential zoned property. This was brought to the council by an apartment/condo complex near Turner Field. The amendment will now be brought to the Mayor for approval or veto. Regardless of whether you view the drifters as fellow gear heads or as crazy hooligans, the city residents will view us both as members of the same family. It is not hard to see a ban on drifting one day becoming a ban on motorsports. We all have engines and screeching tires, after all. If you would like to lend your support, the drift organizers have set up a petition to ask Mayor Kasim Reed to veto ordinance amendment 12-0-0502 (14) here:

http://www.change.org/petitions/atlanta ... -0-0502-14

The ordinance itself is here: (section 6 covers drifting)

http://citycouncil.atlantaga.gov/2012/i ... ed/12O0502.

This is the largest drift weekend in Atlanta, with Formula D (professional drift tour) at Road Atlanta on Friday/Saturday, an event at Turner on Sunday and another event at AMS on Sunday. They will be gearing up interest at Formula D to 'Save Drifting in ATL' and bring national level people to the event at Turner and generally rallying their supporters to bring a large crowd to Turner on Sunday to show the economic impact the sport has in Atlanta. We should all be prepared for some extra traffic and visitors on Sunday. It should be a good opportunity to show our sport to some new people, though a large crowd may present some hassles as well.

The link for the ordinance doesn't work.

Anyone know how it specifies drifting? Is it vague enough that it would also encompass autocross?

Found it:

Code: Select all

(6) Car drifting on private property within 1000 feet of a residentially zoned
district. For purposes of this section, car drifting shall mean a driving technique or
motorsport where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in
the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is
drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an
extent that the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g.
car is turning left; wheels are pointed right or vice versa).

It seems to single out drifting, but I wonder if the uneducated will try to apply to ban to autocross?

on atlanta site, the drifters are asking for court room support...

Atlanta seems to agree that the less association with them...the better.

and btw..its a ban of "motorsports" 1000 yards..or maybe feet,from any residence...

That's basically about a football field distance... that's not really all that bad unless the apartment complex is right beside the property.

Edit: Looks like there is a condo complex right beside the parking lot for Turner field. That sucks.

Seems narrowly tailored to keep out the dirfters, but it wouldn't be hard to change it to all motorsports activities given the speed of the process used here.

a football field is 100 yds / 300 ft .... this is calling for either 1000 yds or ft ... which ever.... one would be 10 football fields the other 3 + football fields

3 ft per yd means that the distance involved is 3000ft. Having played the distance game in multiple liquor/beer lawsuits, that is more than a half a mile and in a intense residential area, there will always be apartments within that distance.

The document says 1000 ft. Not sure what I was thinking earlier... but a football field is technically 120 yards counting the endzones. So almost 3 football fields. Still a long distance.

I genuinely dislike people who cry about a little engine/tire noise for a few hours.. a couple weekends per month in the middle of the day. If every person in that category croaked, I would sleep better that night. I say we figure out what they do on the weekends and start petitioning to ban their lame ass hobbies.
