I havent always agreed with some of his decisions, endorsements and promotions but face it, no one else has ever done what he has done for cars in general and specifically, the Shelby models.

+1, I've got mixed feelings about him too, but he certainly had his moments. His (seemingly endless) lawsuits were not his best moments

Heh, I was reading a story somewhere the other day about the first 289 Cobra - within the first six months it had about ten coats of paint on it because he had it painted a different color every time it was going to be in a magazine. It still makes me laugh.

Ok, I was wrong, it was actually the first Cobra, and that (as we all know, lol) was a 260 Cobra.

Found the article for your reading pleasure:

Heh, slow morning - here's another quote I liked (all too true):

“There is nothing particularly treacherous about the car’s basic handling qualities, because it is a strictly neutral machine as far as oversteer and understeer are concerned. However, the whole question is somewhat academic because if you are feathering it through an 80-mph bend and start sticking your foot in it, you know what happens when 480 lb.-ft. or a multiple thereof hits the rear wheels.”

Very sad indeed. :(

My first two cars were Shelbys, not real Shelbys, but still awesome cars in my eyes. 1986 Dodge Charger Shelby, and a 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby.

Carroll was definitely a legend. I got the pleasure of meeting him about ten years ago at VIR when he was reunited with the Birdcage Maserati that he used to win the very first race at VIR in 1957. That night they had a banquet for all the racers and held a "Roast of Carroll Shelby." Chris Economaki, Bob Bondurant as well as David E. Davis Jr. were doing the roasting along with several of Shelby's former drivers. Definitely a night I will never forget.
