miata 5 speed swap

Post by thewelder »

How hard is it to swap a 5 speed into a 99 miata. I can find cheap ones but they are always autos. Chad

5 hour job I suppose, assuming you don't run into any rounded/broken/rusted bolts. Trans fluid will come out the back of the it fyi. I'd recommend draining it before you drop it, save you a mess.

The bolts around the starter are a pain to get to and the brackets holding the clutch line and wiring harness are really annoying to get back in their spot too. Re-aligning it isn't too hard either, the trans isn't as heavy as you would think.

If you're not using a lift, put the car higher than you think it should be....safely of course. It makes getting the trans on and off a lot easier.

And the most important part, when putting it in you'll need 6 hands. 4 hands is just too annoying, even with a trans-jack.

He means a conversion from automatic to manual. Not just a manual-manual swap.

My 1996 Miata apparently started life as an automatic. It was swapped over before I bought it, so I can't speak on difficulty..

I do know the previous owner never figured out how to fool the ECU into thinking it's a manual car. I think he tried a couple of different ECUs with no luck. Now it has a perma-idiot light on since the car can't find the slushbox.

Not a huge issue to me, but cruise control relies on that stuff to work.

If it is like Nissan's. All you need is a manual ECU. That fixes them. Chad

Oh, I forget they came in automatic  I believe swapping to a manual ecu resolves the problem. The other details I'm not sure about. Running the clutch line might be annoying.

Also note, automatic NA engines came with a different intake cam, more lift and duration 8)

Cruise control and the rest of the BS with a manual trans? At what speed do you set the cruise on the Dragon?
