Miata Koni suspension help

Post by swingdancr »

I'm in the process of assembling the parts for a Koni setup for a Miata.

So far I've collected the following pieces:
  1. NB Tophats
  2. Koni sport shocks
  3. Threaded collars
  4. FCM bumpstops
I'm now looking at springs and can't find QA1 springs in 6" in anything other than 900 lbs.
Found 7" springs in plenty of options, so that's not an issue.

Can I mount the perch on the shock on the lower mounting point to compensate for the longer spring? Or should I just adjust it out using the threaded perch?
Which perch mounting point should I be using of the three on the shock?
It's not an auto-x specific car and will see a good bit of street use. Is 450/300 a decent spring rate for that use?

Do you have two threaded collars per shock or just one

Lord, there's so much conflicting information out there it's maddening.

I hear 7" front and 6" rear from one, 7" on both from another, and 7" front and 8" rear from yet another.

Wouldn't it all depend on where the threaded collar was set on the shock?

Nobody seems to address the multiple mounting clip locations on the shock body. Which one should I use?

Chris, each threaded collar has two adjustable perches that lock together to prevent movement. Is that what you're asking?

it all depends on extend length to determine which groove to put the clip in. At full extension, you want the spring to NOT come off the top seat. The 3 options allow some adjustment.

oh, and 7 front / 6 rear. the conflicting opinions are full of shit. and prolly don't even own a competitive car.

Josh, yes that's what I was asking.

Many coilover setups allow you to adjust the spring perch independently from the ride height. Doesn't look like that's yours though.

Got all the parts and wound up with 7" long, 2.5" diameter, 375 lb fronts, and 6" long, 2.5" diameter, 250 lb rears.

Suggested ride height is 12.5" front and 13" rear.

At 14" rear height, the spring is off the perch at full droop.

Using NA tophats, eBay threaded sleeves, and FCM bumpstops.

Help?

are the Koni's off the shelf yellow sports? if so, you prolly wont be able to get 13 or less and not come off the perch at full droop. I run Koni Race with shortened bodies and rods so I have very little droop. Lots of travel.. just no droop.
