Event#1 2/23/14 Sound report

Post by TedV »

sound readings for the louder cars on Sunday:

Group 1:
XP 6 - 96.6, 95.5, 95.8, under 90
XP 22- 92.5, 95.8, 97.1, 102.2
CP 15- under 90, 89.4, 97.2, under 90
CP115- 94.6, 95.2, 93.4, under 90

Group 2:
BSP 313- 95.9, 95.8, 96.7, 97.4
STM 4- 78.8, under 90, 91.2, 95.4
STM 137- 85.7, under 90, 97.4, 90.6
STM 142- 90.3, 92.8, 92.0, 94.4

Group 3:
PASP 13- 99.1, 94.2, 94.4, 96.7
PSTR 92- 95.7, 96.4, 95.1
PSTR 97- 92.2, 90.3, 97.5, 95.4
PSTR192- 94.0, 95.0, 94.9, 96.1

These are the recorded readings for all the runs on cars that received a warning about sound levels over 94.5 Dba. Over 97.5 received DNF for that run. There are a lot of variables that impact sound readings. On a different day, with a different course, throttle at different position, the readings may be different.

you're right about differing conditions … I've never been that high before, well not on sound anyway  (no changes to the car) …. we'll have to see how it responses next time

and funny enough the "under 90" was my fastest run

thanks

Air density, which is a function of temperature, humidity and barometric pressure affect the value of the sound reading. As I remember, denser air equals louder. I know that sound control at Summit Point records temperature and maybe the other stuff as well. Whether they use that to correct the meter reading to some standard condition is a question to which I don't know the answer.

Speaking of accuracy, does the region have an SPL calibrator to check the meter before an event?

I will post more sound results this evening. Papers are at the house.

The meter has a built in calibration setting to adjust to a base line. I will admit there are better meters out there but at a significant increase in cost. As in cost more than some of the cars competing out there. Setting a meter up for a local autocross is harder than a road race. Throttle inputs change much more in a shorter distance and the best place to put a meter might be in the course.

We all could be driving electric cars and someone could complain about the tire squeal. :?

If someone would like to be chief of sound, please step forward. Its a great way to make new friends.

I did sound for a session once at an event in Roanoke. Tire squeal was a lot louder than most of the engines and appeared to be well over the dB limit. But the microphone location was, to put it mildly, less than ideal.

He also knows how to make them louder. Didn't he run something like 120 at Adesa a couple of years ago?
