Re: Smack Talk 2015
Jeff,
Some of us don't have a trailer and tow vehicle or a tire trailer and tow hitch. That's an extra cost for Hoosiers. Speaking of which, I think I've found a set of used 18x10.5 inch Enkei PF01's for a reasonable price.

Re: Smack Talk 2015
Do they drive 500 miles each way? I could see maybe occasionally driving to Pellissippi if I lived in Knoxville and the weather was good. But I don't. Other than Bristol, I'm driving a minimum of 120 miles each way. More like 200 to Chattanooga or Charlotte.

not available … won't be available for the near future …looks like April for methrdeye wrote:Or, you can just pick the tire that most of the fast guys use on your car (or similar car) and save cubic dollars compared to buying hoosiers.
I'm trying to win, but I don't need to test dunlops, kooks, toyos, etc. I'll let someone else figure out what works best. The fact that the Kook is sold out tells me I've probably picked the right tire.

I sometimes wonder if no one would have made a big deal about the 195 R1R's and 140TW had Hankook kept a reliable supply of tires.

Re: Smack Talk 2015
I just spent more for street tires on a Mustang than I spent on Hoosiers for a Corvette. I ended up with 295s because to go to a 305 cost $110 more per tire. I seriously considered going in to SM but I needed tires anyway. They are not cheaper and it's not as much fun.jcox07 wrote: it ain't cheaper than buying hoosiers in most cases.

How would a set of Hoosiers and a set of street tires be cheaper than just a set of street tires?
Just askin.
This has been hashed, re-hashed, hashed-hashed, re-re-hashed, and re-re-hashed-hashed x infinity on every forum known to man.
I see both sides (really) and for big tire cars, yeah the buy-in is a little higher, but there's a lot more to consider when running Rs, like trailers and such and a second set of wheels (yeah, most people buy a 2nd set anyway, but Rs makes that a requirement).
And the other part is that yeah, locally you might make a whole season on a set of Hoos. But if your working to win, and compete nationally, it's just not possible to make it on one set due to fall-off (some cars are better than others there) but the national quality runs are very early in the life of the tire.
So all considered, street tires are cheaper, but I get your point. And if you can build for a class that can work the tire effectively, Hoosiers makes much more sense....they just don't make sense for most production cars, especially newer, heavier, poorer geometried cars.
My opinion and probably always will be.
Re: Smack Talk 2015
If you go off of Pauls new vette that he got and adessa was his first event with 300 tw michelin on his vette and he lost 4/32 of tread just at adessa in one event and yea I know he ran about 20 runs or so, that would be probably 3-4 local events with that many runs. Now add 3-5 national tours and 7-8 more locals and daily driving as well, one would be lucky to get by with only 2 sets, but more than likely he would need 3 sets of tires. Three sets of Michelin 315 tires at 542.00 each comes to 6504.00 plus tax. If you have a little car that is light and your tire size is a 15 inch in a 225 or 245, you might get by with only 2 sets and yea they will be cheaper cause they are smaller. Now one new set of hoosiers at 412.00 each for 335's comes to 1648.00 plus tax and then you get a couple sets of used hoosiers from Lee for 300-400 dollars and one set of decent street tires for daily driving and for rain tires and your cost is around 3500.00, wow a 3 thousand dollar saving with hoosiers.

Re: Smack Talk 2015
So are you buying someones used Hoosiers at 300-400 in this example? If that is the case, why are you comparing a set of used tire prices to new tire prices?
Re: Smack Talk 2015
Yep used hoosiers that are used at vir for maybe two laps and the corners are not even touched, so basicly they are new and you can't buy good used street tires cause if you find a good set of street tires no one will sell them. My comparsion is to show that you can run hoosiers just as cheap on some cars as street tires.
