I need a volunteer to set up and monitor sound at Bristol - I won't be there.

It's easy - Set up the sound meter 50' to the side of a straight and provide a notebook for logging car numbers + (all) readings (all runs) - All from one meter location. Mark Pilson, Chris Harp, JY, TedV and others can provide meter location guidance as necessary.

Collect it all at the end of each day - get the logs back to me so I can answer requests / questions (or answer those requests here yourself).

Limit is 101.5, warnings at 99.0


The main point of the exercise is to give anyone who is interested a good idea what readings they can expect from their car at Pellissippi and Chilhowee (our sound sensitive locations).

The secondary mission is to give the event chair reliable data if they need to deal with someone who shows up "ear-bleedin-loud".

CHIEFS PAY ATTENTION. This is how this is supposed to work if you can't be at an event!

I am not 100% sure if I will make the event. If I do I can run sound or assist. If I don't I am available by phone for any questions. The hardest part is picking a spot with a straight and the speedway isn't behind you.

The only problem I can see is the drag cars running all day and us getting sound from those also to mess up the readings.

I'd be surprised if even a Top Fuel or Funny Car would exceed 90 dB in the parking lot. It's a fair distance and there are structures in the way. dB readings also don't add arithmetically. If the drag car produced a 90 dB reading and you had a car with 93 dB passing by the microphone, the actual reading would be 95 dB, if I did my sums correctly.

The drag strip is in the valley. I've been at the starting line for Top Fuel and it's impressive. But that's above the level of the parking lot and you have the control/press tower in the way. 43 Cup cars on the track is likely louder and lasts more than 5 seconds. Not to mention that it's unlikely any 10,000hp Top Fuel or Funny Cars will be running on Saturday or Sunday.

What I was gonna ask is will the 101.5 limit be enforced or is it advisory as has been previously stated?
If advisory I was planning on running without baffles. My car generally blows between 101-103 not ear bleading. But if 101.5 is a hard limit I'll prep the car acordingly

Prep it to not blow over 101.5, as that will make you have to fix it before you go out before your next run.
