Warped Rotors?

Post by MikeKelly »

I know most of you have felt it or said it.

Carroll Smith (rest his soul) says you're completely wrong...

"In more than 40 years of professional racing, including the Shelby/Ford GT 40s - the most intense brake development program in history - I have never seen a warped brake disc. "

according to both Stop Tech and Essex … 99.9999999999999% of warped rotors are uneven pad deposits … sometimes brought on by varying density of the casting which results is uneven heating .. thus hot spots which pull material from the pads

yea, I read it.

warped/uneven wear, happens every day. Race cars,I agree..its mainly pad deposits causing pulsations. Not so with a DD street car.
And Im just making reference to famous high profile people declaring things being facts. (but sometimes not)

You mean all those brake rotors I've turned shaped like a pringlez chip I was just machining off built up brake pad material?

I also have to admit I fall into the "put new rotors on it and call it done" category.

But I thought it was interesting reading, gave me some insight into what "bad breaking habits" I don't have, but some of my extended family obviously must have.

i.e. - rolling up to a traffic light hard, fast, hot + standing on the brakes for the whole light cycle...

Uneven wear - yes
Warped -- no

I do pay a lot of attention to how I tighten lug bolts/nets.

I have seen variations of this pop up on various forums for years. Like Ted I have seen many obviously warped discs.

Pulled a set of visibly warped rotors off my '01 back when I first got it. They were so bad (and I was too poor to replace them) I got very good at engine breaking because the vibrations were terrible. Its a fairly well documented problem on 4th gens - don't even need to beat on them that hard to do it.
