Tire Question???

Post by Gen52SS »

Question for some of you more experienced people. I'm following the Toledo Pro I see last years F Street National Champ David Corsaro driving a 2014 1LE Chevrolet Camaro on the new Bridgestones in this event. The car comes with 285/35/20 tires (square setup)? The biggest size Bridges list on Tire Rack are 275/35/19 and rules in FS allow for a 1 inch change in wheel size. Is there a big difference from let's say a 285/35/20 Hankook RS3 v2 (square setup) to a 275/35/19 Bridgestones RE-71 setup? Are the Bridges that GOOD? Must be or he wouldn't be doing it. He Ran the Kooks last year.

Giving up 10mm for a better compound is a no brainer. Going from 20 to 19 will save weight and 8mprove gearing as well

Yep, i looked at that car on those tires. The tire is pretty stretched on the rear but looks good on the front.

Thanks Paul. I was sitting in 2nd until the 2nd drivers came up. A couple of them were quite fast.

Jeff did very well too. It was a tight class and we only had 3 runs to get it done this morning.

When I was changing my tires from Falkens to Bridgestones, I laid them down flat side by side mounted on the same wheels and the 275/35/18 Bridgestone was 1/8" narrower than the 295/40/18 Falken.

You get better gearing. less unsprung weight, less rotational inertia (higher effective torque at the wheel) and lower ride height with smaller diameter wheels and tires. My daily drive Continental tires give 734 revs/mile. My Dunlop ZII's were 768 revs/mile and the RE71R's are 800 revs/mile. Converting revs/mile to radius, which isn't completely accurate, gives 13.74" for the Conti's, 13.13" for the Dunlops and 12.61" for the Bridgestones. So assuming tire flex is about the same, the car is about 0.6" lower with the Dunlops and 1.1" lower with the Bridgestones. My car is a lot faster on Bridgestones than it was on the Dunlops.

I guess what I'm having a hard time getting my head around is the fact that David is running a 2014 1LE Camaro in F Street the stock wheels from what I read are 11 inch wide rear and 10 inch wide front on stock 20 inch wheels..... my SS are 9 inch rear 8 inch front. Shows how much the 1LE has over a stock SS just in wheels? You can drop 1 inch in diameter from the 20's to 19's to run on Bridgestones which only come in 275/19...but the width must stay at 11 and 10? So he's stretching 275/35/19 tire on 11 inch wide rims ??? a 35 is low profile as it is....unless the Bridgestone tires are just that much wider.

If you go to Tire Rack and look at the specs for the RE-71R 275/35/19, you'll see that the rim width range is 9-11". I have my 275/35/18 RE-71R's on 10.5" wide rims. Street tires work best at the high end of the rim width range. With 8" rims on the front of your car, you're pretty much screwed. You could squeeze the 275's on those rims, but they might not work very well. You're in the position I was in the Mustang with 8.5" rims compared to the Brembo version with 9" rims. I was never going to get as much grip, not that it mattered.

Wish I could roll back the clock 20 years.....I test drove the car several times last year and twice again this year. I think I'll have much more FUN (completive fun) playing with more drivers in CS or I can go STX with this car as well a great car to run on the street. I came very close in buying the FRS before the Camaro in 2014...the wife talked me out of it. It has much more headroom and the vision out the front cockpit feel is MUCH BETTER. I just want to AX one it feels right and It's a better bang for the buck...hell for the difference I could add a supercharger or turbo, wheels, tires, suspension parts, exhaust and still cost less then a 1LE.
